For those that don't get it... Simmons talked about it on his podcast last week.  THeoretically, the Cavs could absorb Paul's salary... then we'd get a trade exception (would it be 15mil?) that we could then use to pursue free agents like Josh Smith and AL Jefferson.  Reason is, if Smith was dead-set on bailing on Atlanta, they'd rather have a trade exception from Boston than lose him for nothing.  Trade exceptions are big ... instant cap savings for teams looking to free cap space.  They can be used in a variety of ways.

We could also just hang onto it until next year's free agent class... that way we can thoroughly tank this year and use it later.  Say we finish with the league's worst record.  Best case scenario you get Wiggins.  WOrst case scenario you have the #5 pick + a 15 mil trade exception that you can use to trade for disgruntled allstars like Kevin Love.  Lots of ooptions.

I like it a lot actually. Add a couple kids to a rebuilding roster and get a $16mill trade exception.

The Cavs at a veteran with obvious experience to help mentor the young guys and to make them competitive in the East with no long term commitment. They don't want to add 2 more kids to that roster anyways.

Irving/Waitors/Pierce/Thompsan/Varejao (Noel) definitely make the playoffs in the East and hopefully satisfy Irving.

Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

Sounds like a Danny Ainge wet dream kind of trade. A huge TPE and early seconds round picks he usually scores on.

I'd almost rather have a pick 31-40 in this draft than a pick in the top-10. Miserable year for lottery teams, might not be so bad afterwards. Ala 2006.

With this trade exception, could we use it at anytime?

Edit: Meaning do we have to wait a certain timeframe before we could use it?

My understanding is we can use it immediately.
I think this is often how multi-team trades get done technically.
Celtics fan for life.

I think the 15m trade exception is worth more than any mid-late first we could get, especially if we get 2 early second rounders.

I'd be plenty happy with this deal.

Yeah sign me up for that second one.

Yeah I'd be thrilled to get two picks at the top of the second round.  Danny can find some value there.  I also think we'll get a decent guy at #16.  We could have 3 or more rookies next season.

Hypothetically speaking, how much would the trade exception be for money wise? 15 million? Personally, whatever it is, I think that's a pretty solid deal. 2 picks and you don't have to add any crappy players or salary to your team. I'd be all over that. That seems more of a draft day type trade.

Sounds almost too good to be true for the Celtics, but probably isn't high on the list for PP.  Doesn't seem like any reason for the Cavs to let PP go if this is what happens.

I guess the cavs do have some talent.  They could probably use some veteran leadership with all the young guys.  But even with PP I don't see them more than a 7-8 seed.

Yeah, well, if they keep the #1 pick and Varejao comes back healthy, they could be a fun team, and I think at this point they have a lot of young talent on the team, it's time for them to start experiencing what it's like to actually win some games.

It's the same situation the Wizards are in.  At some point there's not a lot of value in continuing to add young guys with potential.  There's only so much playing time.  Once you have some core talent in place you want to develop it by actually trying to win and learning how to compete in close games.

Best case could be get Wiggins and use the trade exception and some of your other young assets (i.e.Rondo etc) for one of those disgruntled young all stars.

Think we could use this as room to pursue DH12 or CP3? Assuming of course the Lakers and Clippers play nice with a sign and trade....just saying

No offense, but I think some of you guys are dreaming way too big with Andrew Wiggins and Dwight Howard.

Just be happy with a couple of kids Danny likes and a large trade exception for now.

If Doc and KG arent going anywhere, we should keep Pierce and go ahead with what we have.
