Pierce is worth more than that.

What would you consider fair value then?

In terms of helping us with our rebuild I think this is as good as it probably gets.

If we're gonna trade him, I'd want young talent + first round pick. It's a high expectation and we couldn't get it last year but I don't want to go any lower. MarShon Brooks + 1st

 :'(

Yeah but that is probably unrealistic unless we get really lucky and the Nets (or a similar team: GS, Dallas etc.) are extremely desperate to shed cap room. Since we haven't been approached yet (at least publicly) and we really only have about 10 days to trade Pierce so he can be waived, thats most likely not happening.

The deal with Cleveland is extremely realistic. If we couldn't get young talent and a first for him last year, this is probably close to as good as we are going to get barring something crazy happening.

2 second rounders (almost 1st rounders) and a giant trade exception we can use now or whenever we get the opportunity in the future. Its alost as good as the deal we would get from the Clippers for KG and Doc, except instead of taking on Jordan's bloated contract we get a trade exception and the picks are a little later.

Two second rounders... I hope we're all realizing that Kyrie has stated that he does not wish to lose any longer. Cleveland will obviously appease their superstar and next season, they start to play for real. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a top-6 seed at worst next year. Cleveland is gonna get real and our picks will be... worthless.

Aren't the picks supposed to be for this year? #31&33.

Anyway the TE is much more value.

Can someone with a better memory than mine point me to any instances in the past when teams have used their trade exceptions to acquire valuable pieces?

I'm just trying to get a picture of how valuable that exception really will be.
TE was used to get Nash. TE was used to get Al Jefferson to Utah. TE's have been used to buy draft picks for absorbing some salary, etc...

They often don't result in anything though.
Cavs used the trade exception they got from Lebron to take on Baron Davis contract and a 1st from the Clippers.  The first turned into Kyrie Irving.

Cool, maybe we can partner up with the Clips with our exception too.

Anyone heard any rumors recently about the possibility that the Clippers might be interested in some kind of trade with us?

I thought Mo Williams was traded for Baron Davis...
you are right I misremembered.  They certainly could have used the TPE, but did not in that case.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Edit: I see mention of the Nash deal. Any others?

While I don't have the particulars in my mind I know that a few teams have picked up decent draft picks picking up unwanted salaries for trade exceptions. Did Cleveland use a trade exception for Mo Williams? And Phoenix (I think) traded away 2 first rounders to someone for taking a $8M player off of their hands (PJ Brown or someone similar). You can make out pretty well with the trade exceptions if you're lucky.

when I first read the title ,  I didn't know if I should laugh or cry.......poor Pierce ...LoL.......
but........ after reading the comments in total on this thread .......

I'm inclined to agree with this deal,  especially with the TE. included in the deal.

I'm afraid , it's about as good as deal as we are gonna get.......

This would allow Boston to recruit a serious talented big .

I don't know why people think we should also get a young player as well. I mean PP was barley good in the playoffs. His turn overs alone could have cost us some of the games. And he only has a year, two at best before he's done.

Teams that are right there can't trade for them because they have money already tide up. Teams like Cleveland want PP for his leadership to teach the young bucks how to win, why would they get ride of that young talent.

The TE can get you a Smith, Millsap type player. So theres your young player right there.

You could pull in a Rice Jr and Mike Muscala at those pics and maybe one of them takes if not both.

Use Terry and Bass, maybe Melo to bring in an other player.

You could have some thing like this with this deal

Rondo
AB
Green
Smith or Millsap
KG
With Lee/Randolph/Williams/Crawford/Terry/Bass pics 16,31,33 to move for other players or keep to play.

Not great but not Charlotte bad. But if KG hangs it up, it would be worse, tell Rondo to take his time and roll the dice. May not get a Wiggins, but the pick could bring in a older star player.

I think the Pierce and Bradley deal for Eric Gordon is 10 times better than this.

Fairly sure we could still flip that trade exception along with Bradley to absorb Gordon's contract and we'd have an additional 2 high 2nd rounders out of the deal. New Orleans likes that even more because they wouldn't have to eat $5m of Pierce's deal.

Also, sources tell SheridanHoops.com the Cavs are in serious discussions to acquire Shawn Marion from Dallas in a lopsided trade that would allow them to move up from No. 19 to No. 13 in the first round by relieving the Mavs of Marion’s $9.3 million salary, allowing  Mark Cuban more salary cap flexibility to use on July 1.
Yes, this would seem to put the kabosh on a PP deal to them.  Affords them most of what PP provides, including an expiring contract (for 5.5M cheaper), but it also allows them to trade up from 19th to 13th in this draft, instead of giving up the two early second rounders.  Too bad.  It would have been nice to have that huge trade exception.

The Cavs have likely spoken to the Celtics about small forward Paul Pierce’s availability. The latest rumor is the Cavs offering their two second-round picks for the 35-year-old Pierce. Pierce’s $15.3 million contract for next year would become guaranteed if he’s dealt.

Probasketballtalk

So cavs already offered this deal to us but the article doesnt say anything about a trade exception coming with the picks

Isn't a trade exception assumed?

If we trade a player without getting any salary back we would get a trade exception.

I think they are wrong about Pierce's deal being guaranteed when he is dealt.
