Why don't the Celtics just let Doc out of his contract so he can get hired by LA?

It's quite obvious that you can NOT just swap a coach for a 1st round pick in the NBA.

And then, why don't the Celtics and Clippers just do a separate deal with KG going to LA for Jordan, Butler and a 1st round pick?

Then in the end, KG and Doc still end up in LA.

Not sure why this has become so complicated!!

Do you guys think Danny wouldnt even budge for just 1 pick because it'd mean losing KG for nothing....since he only wants to be where Doc is and would probably retire?
See, I think either is okay for the Celts.  If we get something for him, then fine.  If he retires, then fine, we get some salary off the books.

As free-agent star Chris Paul pressures the Clippers to get deals done for Rivers and eventually Garnett, the Clippers' unwillingness to make a formal offer to Boston for compensation on Rivers has left many in the process confused, sources said.

Boston has insisted on Jordan and a first-round pick for Garnett, and would allow Rivers out of his contract to join the Clippers in a separate deal for a first-rounder, sources said.

Great, these guys are unreal screw them don't budge at all and just walk away Danny.

Smells like posturing to me by the teams.

1) Clippers pretend like they won't compensate the Celtics at all.

2) They relent and give up a single 1st rounder, which everyone on earth agrees is reasonable. Doc goes to the Clippers and Paul re-signs.

3) Let the summer play out.

4) KG says "trade me or I retire", and here's my list of teams I'll accept a trade to.

5) Trade to the Clippers for Jordan + 1st rounder. Clippers won't back out because Doc and Chris Paul would freak. None of the other listed teams are realistic.

Note that this way, if the league steps in they are denying Garnett his wish to keep playing. That's a PR nightmare and the player's union freaks.

If Ainge budges here, it means he will have a difficult time holding firm in a future deal, such as if he is trying to avoid giving up both Sullinger and Bradley in a trade to bring in an All-Star caliber player to go with Rondo and Green.

Ainge has to be known as a guy who will not make deals out of desperation.

That's the thing with this.  The firsts aren't that valuable.  Not valuable enough to show you can be walked all over to other GMs.

By being difficult, the Clippers have backed the Celtics into a corner. When Doc still had the option to return, the Celtics could demand compensation to let him out of his deal. Now that this issue has continued in the news for so long, the Celtics have lost all leverage as it seems Doc really can't come back anymore after this.

I don't like the precedent of not getting compensation. The coach is under contract. You can't just let him go when information gets leaked to the press or teams will always leak information to the press for leverage.

We've had Ainge here for awhile.  Do you seriously think he budges ?

He's getting Jordan + 2 firsts...or Jordan/Bledsoe & a 1st...or Jordan, a 1st, & the Clips take on a bad contract.

Or he's standing pat, letting Doc broadcast, & KG retire & using his contract elsewhere.

He's got a plan, unlike the joke of a franchise called the Clippers.

Under no circumstances would I let Doc walk for free.  Really, I think the onus is on Doc.  If he can't make a deal, the HE must decide what he wants to do.  Either come back and coach or go to TV.  Either way, Doc wouldn't be coaching in the NBA for the next three years unless the Celts receive some form of compensation.

Not at all.  There is no corner when you have a coach & player already signed to deals.

You can do what you want.

Seems like they really don't want to keep CP3 and hence, their franchise relevant.
