It's mainly about the actual costs to us mortals (I'm sure athletes get athlete-rates?) but I thought it was pretty interesting nonetheless, and tells you a fair bit about ACL injuries in the process.

Cheerio!

Definitely a good read.

The medical supplies thing is so ridiculous.  I remember when I got surgery for a broken finger and looking at the cost breakdown.  A finger split was like $300.  Heck, I could've ran out to 7-11 and bought a popsicle for $1.99 and wrapped an elastic around the popsicle sticks after eating it and gotten the same results.

The very ambulance ride is $714 in NYC and $12 per mile >:( Scammers.

And the insurance barely pays it!

I don't want to read this article.   About 7-8 years ago I was playing basketball, planted my right foot hard and twisted... I heard a pop.  I think it might have swollen up for a few days, but it wasn't all that painful and I could still walk.  I didn't have health insurance so I just let it be.  Whatever happened, it seemed to heal itself.

Since then I had noticed odd issues...  I noticed I was subconsciously favoring my left leg all the time.  I noticed when I was skiing, it was a lot easier to turn right than left... probably because when turning right you push with your left leg.  And I've noticed that while jogging, it almost seems like my right foot is slightly crooked... and my left calf muscle is bigger than my right.

So a couple years ago when I finally had health insurance, I went to a doctor and they discovered that I have a partially torn ACL.  It's barely being held together, I guess... so I should avoid basketball.  I'm afraid to get it fixed, because even though insurance will cover most of it... it's still a big operation and will take like a year to get right.  And unlike professional athletes, I can't dedicate the next year of my life to rehabbing my ACL.   On the flip side, if I don't get it fixed I'll probably continue to have more and more issues related to it as I get older.  It's like my right leg is slightly crooked now... so I go jogging and end up having soreness in my foot, because it's not landing the proper way.
