If Doc leaves, who coaches?

Never realized Doc was such a polarizing figure. Guess I should have, because I see both sides and am often ambivalent about him. Still, the concentration of sarcasm in barely 3 pages of a thread underscores just how polarizing Doc has become.

To the topic at hand,if Doc leaves (and I would be surprised if this happens, and I don't think it happens if either PP or KG are still here)), then I like Sloan and then Collins.

From the outside looking in, it doesn't seem like Doc gets 100% from his players.

That would also be the pro to KG/Pierce leaving as well. Because if we get another year of KG, Pierce and Doc, you know we are ONLY going to get effort on just 50% of the regular season games and I just hate that as a fan.

Sometimes I wonder what would be better, a team that tries hard every game but may not make the playoffs vs a team who will likely make it but "flips the switch" on and off.

  Are you old enough to remember the Pitino years? Compare how you felt about those teams to how you've felt about the Celts the last few years and there's your answer.

If Doc isnt' coaching, it's a sign that we are going into full-blown tank mode... so it literally doesn't matter who coaches.  One of the assistants like Tyrone Lue or something... or hire ML Carr.

It will take us 5-50 years to become relevant again.  If that ever happens, I'm sure Doc will have an open invitation to come back to Boston... but he'll likely be coaching some other playoff team by then.

Agreed. If doc is gone then so is pierce and kg and at that point it doesn't matter bc were not even dreaming of contending at that point.

Yup... if you hear about Doc leaving, it means we're tanking.  SO at that point they can just let the ballboy coach.  Doesn't matter.  We can start discussing real future coaching candidates in 5+ years if Boston ever has a good team again.

Honestly, if we are going into rebuilding mode, we're best off just keeping Doc. He's fantastic working with young players.  But it probably will tarnish Doc's career to lead a lotto team again... so i don't blame him for wanting to move-on.  He's even better working with stars and some team would gladly hire him to lead their contender... which is probably more appealing than leading a team with the talent to win 25-38 games max.

Maybe Scal should jump on and become an assistant, and KG could be player/big man coach for a couple years, then they can take over when Doc really heads out.

I'd only want Scal as a head coach over KG because you know KG with be tossing F bombs at the refs on bad calls the first couple minutes of the game and get tossed before half time in 90% of them.

Also listing to Scal during games, he really knows his stuff, If they are rebuilding, I'd like to see him with the team to to get his feet wet when your going to tank so wins don't really matter the first couple years anyways..LOL!

I don't think Doc is planning on leaving.  I believe he wants the same core back, and this is his only leverage to get that.   Ultimately, I do think he will be back.  I know many do not, but I say give the core, with Doc, another chance at it, hopefully they stay healthy.  PP and KG can play reduced minutes.  A second championship would assure both KG and PP a place in the rafters.  (I feel they deserve it anyway!)  As I have said before, IMO the team is already well into the rebuild mode.

If it does not work out, PP, KG or RR may be worth a lot more to a team trying to find that final piece to get them over the hump at the trade deadline... either as a player or as an expiring contract or a player who could be waived for cheap.

If we don't bring them back, we are probably not going to win a title this year anyway, and they may be able to do it together.

As far as the "underachieving" Doc comments, I believe just the opposite.  Doc has taken teams that were injured, duck taped and patched together far into the playoffs...sometimes to the finals, and I do not think there is another coach in the league who could have done better with the teams Doc had.

Ahh, well, at least he could teach toughness?  His women's team was tough, and they would run through walls for him, they say.

I would love Scal as a coach, and he has a great mind for the game, but he has no experience.  Would KG even want to coach?  Maybe follow the path of Bill Russell and start as player coach?  Does the league even allow that anymore?  Just wondering...
