I'd rather go for potential in this draft, regardless of position.  Not too interested in Olynyk, even though there are some aspects of his game that I really like.

More Fab Melo? (!) ?

As an approach to the draft, I'd say yes. With pick 16/17 in this year's draft I feel like we have at least an outside shot at taking a player in Rondo/Green/Bradley realm. Why pass up even an outside chance at getting a 'starter on a good team' quality player to draft a rotation big, when you can just pick up a Collins or Randolph type for virtually nothing?

With that said I get that some think Olynyk will be more than a "rotation big"

I hope we don't take Olynyk.

Olynyk = Next to soft in the dictionary.

I don't understand where this opinion comes from. His faults are foot speed and vertical leap. In the post he bangs and seals his man with force similar to Sully.

Can you explain to where this opinion derives? I ask because you are not the first person to post this and I wish to understand.

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
He's ready to contribute right now. I'd rather get Olynyk than a project who won't play for a year or two.

Heck yeah. We need help maintaining the mediocrity we've become right away.

It's my opinion, but I think when KG and Pierce leave we lose our best chance of winning a championship for the next 10+ years.

We really don't need to be stacking up each potentially decent center in hopes that he'll pan out. We already have one in Melo. I'd like someone who'd be able to actually be a part of the roster next season, not someone who we will stash in the D-League.
I like Marcus Smart

hardaway jr

I would be a big fan of his. Glenn Robinson III too.

Don't think GR3 would fall to us. But Junior would probably be around by the time we pick. I like him. Think he could be a very good scorer in the NBA.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

meh. This early in the draft process, it is just throwing darts at a board. Who knows who the Cs will take 2.5 months from now. Who cares? We've still got a lot of basketball left for this team in the 2012-2013 season.
Celtics fan for life.

Yeah this is more about draft slots than fits still.

And also similar to last year's draft in the parity of the talent. Less talent at the top(I know this has become cliche), but seemingly more parity, actually. I think it makes things more interesting, and fortunate for us it seems an ideal year to have a middling pick.

Are there degrees of parity? If not, there should be.....

then this is the perfect draft for the celtics. from what i read there is a great depth of mediocrity to choose from. even the top picks are turning out to be older than stated or have injuries.

i am quite sure that ainge will go for the bpa. that is anyone's guess on who it will be. i think ainge wont even know until he sees who is available when it is his turn to pick.

Good Grief.

16: Kelly Olynyk   Boston Celtics
COLLEGE: Gonzaga   AGE: 21  HT: 7-0  WT: 238   POS: C
Analysis: The Celtics definitely need size, and Olynyk is the sort of stretch big man that the team has liked in the past. His low-post game is still so-so, but he's a very difficult matchup on the high post. His ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the basket is special for a player his size. He could be a nice complement, in the long run, with Jared Sullinger.

Please save me. I know we have no sway over the Celtic front office. I know it is still ages before the draft. I know the chances of Ford being right at this point is slim.

However, if it had any hope of working I would start a campaign to keep us from drafting this guy. The last thing we need is a slow, nailed to the floor, bad on the defensive end stretch 4/5. We could get any number of them from Europe as a cheap free agent.

The game is getting faster and faster with perimeter players meaning more and more to a teams success. How in the world would we compete with Olynyk and Sullinger on the front line. One slow undersized banger and one slow undersized center who likes to play at the elbow. We would get killed down low on defense. Plus, what does that mean for Fab Melo? That we just wasted a first round pick for nothing? With the new CBA, draft picks are worth so much more now. You can not foul them up. Olynyk would be a flagrant foul.

He's not slow. In fact, his ability to run the floor is very good.

Just finished listening to the Bill Simmons/Chad Ford podcast. Chad as already labelled Fab Melo a massive bust. He also said Sullinger was worth the risk and agreed with Bill that if he comes back ok (They also agreed that most guys come back healthy these days) that he will be special. Chad also said ironically that Olynyk could be the player that people get excited about and ends up being a stiff. Melo is a stunning bust for sure and Olynyk is at best a poor mans Vlade Divac. At best.

This draft is deep at the 3 and 2 positions. Which we actually really need. A legit 2 to be sure. I love Bradley but he is a one who can guard twos and with Bradley and Rondo in the back court you simply are not going to get enough scoring. That is still a major problem with this team, particularly in the playoffs against good teams. We have a really hard time scoring enough. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope or Jamaal Franklin are the two guys I would love to get. If a miracle occurred C.J. McCollum would be great if he is there at 16 or 17 if we end up picking there.

He runs the floor well but is not quick on defense. His certainly nailed to the floor. 0.9 blocks a game from a seven footer playing in a lame conference? Seriously? No thank you.

I'm not seeing the Divac comparison. I see him more of a Luis Scola clone, but taller. A below the rim type that excels in the fundamentals (shooting, passing, footwork) and gets the job despite lacking excellent leaping ability.

Again, I see him more of a Scola type. Is he going to be a good shot blocker, no However, he will excel in transition offense and his passing ability from the high post would be a great addition to our team. He and KG would form a nice tandem with their interior passing ability. Remember also that the NBA has become highly dependent on pick and rolls. I think he would provide immediate impact in this area with his shooting ability to pick and pop, as well as his sure hands, ability to finish with either hand, footwork, mobility, and fundamentals on rolls to the basket.

He definitely won't be a workout wonder, but I would love to see him in Green based on all the other things he brings to the table.
