  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
The problem come with the future.  I think counting on KG playing, and being productive beyond another year or two might be pushing our luck.  So, then you are rebuilding around Rondo and Smith.  Two great defenders who may hurt each other offensively since they both struggle shooting.  And you will have Smith eating up a stars portion of the cap, which will make it harder to replace KG (or Pierce for that matter).

Is it any better of an option to have Rondo and Green as the two best pieces going forward, when Green is making 9 million per?

Smith is eligible for a 3 yr extension. Green's on for the next 4.

2 things.  First, I don't think Smith signs a 3-year extension with anyone (and in fact, if he were traded at the deadline, I don't think he would even be eligible for that, because of the new trade and extend rules).  He will be looking for a 4 or 5 year free agent or Bird Rights contract.

And second, I think he will be looking for significantly more than the $9 million per year that Green is getting.  And if Danny gives up an arm and leg to trade for his rights, he will be obliged to give him what he is asking, or lose all those assets for nothing.

So, if they option is after this season having Green for another 3/$27 million, or having Smith for 4/$60 million.  I go with Green.

Neither is something I am all that excited about, because neither duo is good enough to lead the team into a winning future, but at least Green leaves more room for signing a real star to compliment them, and they would also be maintaining more assets to hopefully use on a real #1 or 2 option, rather than using those assets for Smith.

I apologize. I didn't realize that emoticons fell under that rule, especially since I've seen it done multiple times by others.

To explain my emoticon: It just seems to me that a Josh Smith thread pops up here every other week, and that the topic has been discussed ad nauseum, like our own little version of the Dwightmare. I know I don't have to read them all (and I don't), but I think this dead horse has been beat enough.

This.  The bottom line.

And let me add to my own statement here.  Unless Green really surprises people, neither scenario is really a great place to be.  But I don't think using one mistake to justify another, potentially bigger one, is a good idea.

I think I disagree with you. Four years of an all-star in his prime (and he will make all-star teams. He should have already) at $15 million per year is still a more or less guaranteed solid value whereas Jeff Green at $9Mx3 is a gamble no matter how much you like him.

I want Josh Smith on the team , but not at the price that is being discussed  to get him.  As great as piece he would be for this team or alot of others , he wants franchise player type money for his services.

Good as he is , he is not worth  the future of the team at this point . Dumping the rest of the team to bring him on board is not gonna bring a banner.

Smith would have to do the  "HEAT" type of deal with the club and other players , give up some salary to play together .   Like BOsh , Lebron and Wade did.

Only the LAKERS are allowed to get the top players for NOTHING

Well, this is where it comes down to player evaluation.  Personally, I just see Smith as a very marginal All-Star talent.  I think he has GAPING holes in his game, and that is hard to pay a premium for.

Smith is a better player than Jeff Green.  I won't debate that.  But $6 million more per year better?  That, I am not sure of.  I think for that, Smith would have to progress significantly, and Green would have to regress significantly.

Really, I think Smith is basically Gerald Wallace.  And Wallace is looked at as overpaid at 4 years/$40 million.  I wouldn't pay the extra for Smith.

Yes.

I'll comment that Green wasn't a mistake, it was a calculated gamble.  With him, the roster is balanced, talented, full, and deep.  Without him, we're all crying about a backup to Pierce and matching up with big 3's like Melo, Lebron, Granger, etc.  That's worth a bit of a premium if you've managed to pull everything else together.  And I don't think he's getting that much of a premium.  It's not likely to be a disaster either way.

Maxing out Josh Smith, on the other hand, would create a roster disaster for all of the reasons mentioned.  And that's what's coming up.

We should worry about him getting shipped to Chicago for Boozer.

The only way Smith comes to Boston is if Pierce/Garnett retire after the season and we make a silly bid for close to max money.

Also I don't think he's worth it. If we do end up with that kind of cap space and a Rondo/Bradley/Green/Bass/Sully/Lee young team we'll target a center. Bynum is a FA next season as is Dwight Howard. Granted they could make more guaranteed money staying on their current teams but we don't need another PF. We need a center when Garnett leaves.

That's why I've been trying to find ways to get Cousins here in a year or two. Melo might pan out but I'm not putting all my eggs in that basket. I think there will be a conversation after the season with Pierce/Garnett and if they are going to retire. There are two franchise centers in Free Agency this off season and it might be worth making a play at them.

I hadn't mentioned this trade , hoping I was paranoid , but I think Smith will play on either the Bulls or Lakers. :'(

We should worry about him getting shipped to Chicago for Boozer.

I would be SHOCKED if they traded him for Boozer.  They worked really hard last summer to clear off the bad contracts.  I think they will wait until they can at least make their pitch to Chris Paul and Dwight this summer, before they return to their old form.

Now, I could see them go after Noah instead of Boozer...but Chicago probably wouldn't do that.

If they trade him, I think it will be for either an elite center, or cap space and draft picks/young players.

I also think there is a really good chance they don't trade him though.  I think they believe they have a legit chance at getting Chris Paul, and keeping Smith, and putting together their own super team.
