  • About five seconds after 17 O'clock!!

and Scottie ... I didn't forget you or mean oldfan on my post....ugghy did a good job of remembering lots of peeps...

Oddly enough we were talking about the old board a month or so ago, Old Fan speaks very highly of you.

We couldn't remember how the board ended...I thought it was because they couldn't control the language and the spamming and what not. Old Fan thought it was because they changed it to a pay site.

GeoCities Celtics message board (don't remember the year, but I was still using WebTV,  ;) .  When that closed, on to the Globe.   Used my real name in those days.   When that closed I lurked at all the Celtics sites I could find, finally starting to chat on this one.

I remember a poster named Brandon Stahl, who was studying to be a MD, questioning my intelligence for using WebTV, so I wouldn't join another group, but lurked for years.

Hey Brandon, if you are still out there, I haven't gotten any smarter since then.  ;D

Oh my God...or me as it  were. I started off on the Celtics Usenet group back in the mid 90s and Brandon was there. I was makka. He was **** then and I imagine he still is. Haven't thought of him in years.

At one point there was a huge invasion off the group from the la folks and it got crazy. I think I left in 1998.  I believe it's still going.

I've been on the intetwebs for a me's age starting back on the Celtics group at digital equipment in the late 80s.

Lurking has become the most enjoyable form of interaction (?) As I ran out of energy to Arthur years ago after a long run on Boston sports media watch.

Brandon Stahl.....what an ass.

I started over at the ESPN boards. There was a troll over there named TA (TradeAinge) who used to always asked what everyone had for lunch and then critique their choices. I wonder if those boards still exist??

If I ever lose my job and have lots of time on my hands, I may start my own lunch critique over here.

I was at the ESPN board years ago too, that guy was a riot. I wondered what happened to the regulars over on the Celtics board (Sapp, Seif, jk9898, etc.)

+1 I remember those guys.  DjHerbs too.  Sapp was from the DC area like me, so I always remember him when I think of those boards.

I always remember battling New Jersey Nets trolls there back in the day, though that one guy NetsNetsNets was always hilarious

Those names bring me back.  I started posting on the espn board around the time Pitino was fired and we went on a winning streak.  that place was troll city.  Now I post here and on celticsgreen.

Celtics Pride and Celtics 24/7 for me. They were essentially the same place, run by the same guy, TJ. Moderated them for a year or two. I think FL used to post there, unless there's a copy-cat on the loose.

ESPN boards... they hated me there too.

I probably stopped going there in about 2003-04.  I remember this, because my favorite ESPN board quote of all time is, "Marcus Banks... 6-7 Larry Bird... kid's a stah!!  BOOK IT!".  It still makes me laugh.

Then at some point I got banned from RealGM for exposing that fraud CelticsThug.

Going way back to like 1997, I didn't know how to internet so good...and I found some NBA bulletin board of some sort.  I spent most of my time posting pictures of Larry Bird using what I later learned was HTML code... I'd type code like, <img src=C:\pics\larry2.jpg>, hit submit and proudly smile at the awesome pictures I shared.  Years later I thought back to this and had a sudden epiphany that nobody other than myself actually ever saw my awesome Larry Bird pictures since all the code was pointing to images on my drive.  Oh well.

Also... back in my day screen names could only be 8 characters long.  LarBrd33 was the best I could do.  LarryBrd and LaryBird must have already been taken.

My first post ever was on the experimental Biology MCAS back in 2003.  The test didnt count they were just trying it out on my grade before implementing it in later year.  I believe the essay question was something about mitosis and i wrote a quality essay about why Paul Pierce was the most dominant shooting guard in the NBA
CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

Drinks have morphed into coffee and donuts over time, I think.  Folks are getting older!

Celtic Pride newspapers they sent out back in the 90s!

I loved those!   I saved all mine and have them put away somewhere around here.

First joined and posted here in 2007, but I had been following Jeff and CelticsBlog as a lurker for a few years before that.  Guess I've gone back to (mostly) lurking though I still check in almost every day.

I remember one or two site upgrades before this forum settled in at SBNation.  Celticsblog and the Globe seemed to have the two best groups of commenters, until the Globe shut it down.

Maybe I missed it on previous postings, but one of the more active Celtic boards was the 'Usenet' group called alt.sports.basketball.nba.boston-celtics.  Verizon stopped supporting 'Usenet' groups years ago.  Thus, more people gravitated to the Internet based boards.  I believe if it that format were still available a lot of posters would prefer it over what we have today. (Just my opinion)

For those 'not' familiar with the Usenet format, it worked best using MS Outlook Express.  Although, you could access it on the Internet as well. From my experience, it just didn't seem to be as interactive on the 'Net'.

I felt the 'Usenet' format was a lot more dynamic than present day boards.  Since the responses to the postings were collapsible one could see many-more listed postings at one time. If you clicked on the posting you wish to view, numerous follow-up responses/threads could pop-up.  Old postings could be viewed without changing pages.  Thus, it was normal for topics to be discussed and rehashed for days, weeks or even months.  This led to closer friendships and often-times more animosity. Sometimes the arguments and name calling got to be pretty pathetic. And, since it was virtually un-monitored, trolls could wreak havoc whenever they wanted. But, overall it was a pretty good experience.

Although, one big advantage groups such as Celticblog.com had over the 'Usenet' format is that we get to respond to continuous flow of featured newspaper or sports articles. That was one thing those groups lacked that I wish it had.  Although, to be honest, I'm glad they removed 'Usenet' because I found it too addicting. I'd waste at least 1-2 hours a night responding to the various threads when I should have been doing other things.
