Hollinger crunched some of the numbers in terms of the max we could have paid Lee:

John Hollinger: With Pavlovic in deal, Lee contract can start at just over $6M and make $26M over life of deal

It would be crazy if Lee got $6 million per season, and Mayo settled for $4 million.
That'd make Mayo even more furious at having to settle for  a Posey deal I bet.

If Lee is making 6 million I hope it isn't too many years, but at least he's young enough to make it not be assured dead weight by the end....

Yeah agreed.   I didn't see the Mayo discount coming.

Yeah.  It could work out, and we were going to pay Ray that much, I guess, but the idea of paying our 8th best player $6 million per season would make me cringe a bit.

If it makes you feel better we paid O'Neal 6 million last year too ;).

why does it matter? it's not like we are going to have any cap space until at least 2014 anyways....

Perhaps he won't be our 8th best player though...

I am sure I am just looking through Green tinted glasses, but I really think Lee is a PERFECT fit for this team, and more specifically with Rondo and Pierce.  He can run the floor, defend, and he is a great catch and shoot guy.  So, I am not sure, when it is all said and done he is not our 4th or 5th best player, and averaging 13-14+ points per game with quality defense and high percentage shooting.

The problem is he's never been a high-percentage shooter, and has never averaged 13 ppg. Let's hope for a Rondo effect...

It matters because starting next season, there are going to be huge disincentives not to spend money above the luxury tax.  The more that is committed to long-term salaries now, the less flexibility there's going to be next season, etc.

I'm happy with the signing, but my guess is that we would regret having Courtney Lee on our books for $6+ million in a season or two.  Let's hope it's not quite that much.

never been a high percentage shooter? He is a 39% career 3 pt shooter and 44% from the field, also 82% FT shooter. Those look like some pretty good percentages to me.

you always overpay for other people's free agents, ...and sometimes your own - see Green

thankfully Rondo and KG are both bargains at this point

44% from the field

That's high for a shooter right?

39% from 3 is just nuts.

Yeah, exactly.  And he has never played with a team that moves the ball like the C's.

As far as averaging 13 ppg, he averaged 12.5 in his second year.  I was taught to round up on 5 and above, so I count that as 13.   ;D

well it's definitely not bad, Ray is a 45% career shooter from the field.(not saying lee is on rays level as a clutch shooter, but has very similar percentages over their career's)

I find these to be just ok numbers, even for a shooter. Of course, I probably shouldn't be measuring everyone against Steve Nash and Ray Allen -- but even so, .450+ from the field and .400+ from three are some sort of minimum in my book.

He had an eFG% of .508.  That's pretty good, but not amazing.  Among players basketball-reference lists as guards or swingmen, that would have ranked 42nd last season.
