As much as I feel Penn St. needs to get punished via legal system or however for this I really don't want the NCAA taking more power.

This is the organization that will spend a few weeks investigating sandwiches, while boosters host yacht parties for recruits and the like unnoticed.

This I agree with.  I really think it should be the Pennsylvania legislature (this is a state school, right), lowering the hammer.  This isn't a sports issue, this is about the administration.  And the administration needs to be handled by those who pay their salaries.

Yeah agreed, either the legislature or the courts would be better.

I think a mob with torches would probably get the job done more quickly and efficiently.

Perhaps we should have a poll.

A) NCAA
B) Courts
C) State legislature
D) Mob with torches
Mob violence, that's the answer!

Due process pffft, wussy talk.

We could go biblical...an eye for an eye.

The administration should bend over and take their punishment from the mob with angry torches.

Only half-joking.  There are some things society has clearly and repeatedly shown no tolerance for, and offers severe penalties.  There is no public registry of convicted murderers, after all...

And these guys looked the other way dozens of times for for the money and pride of football.

I'm not sure being raped by the burning torches of an angry mob is too far out of line.

Of course, I'm no lawyer.

No mention of scholarship reductions?

4 year bowl ban is pretty significant. Obviously, the $60 million in fines is too.

Paterno just got knocked down the alltime win list.

Ya pretty surprised here, the fines i don't think are all that meaningful in the long run for a school with such a big endowment, the wins thing is just kinda for show.

The bowl ban is the most significant.
You know what's sad.

That 60 million dollar fine is likely going to end up destroying some smaller sports programs and maybe the english department before it touches football.

At least they did say it will go to charitable funds to prevent child abuse.

Also Penn state players free to transfer with no wait period.  That could be the most meaningful for the program

Didn't they say the reduction from 25 to 15 scholarships per year for four years?

Question:  Say Jerry Sandusky was not a child molester but a cat burglar.  Everything else is the same, do people still feel the same way about potential penalties?

Molesting a child is a heckuva lot more heinous and damaging than burglary.  Theres not even a comparison.

Yeah, they are not even in the same league.  Honestly, I wonder if it would even be treated as harshly if Sandusky was a serial killer.  In the rankings of criminals in our society, child molesters are at the very bottom...only above those who molest children and then kill them afterwards.
the victim is different and more heinous, but the actions are very similar in that it is a crime that affects a lot of people.  Crimes are not the purview of the NCAA nor should they be.

Yep.  40 less scholarships.

They also are allowing all football players an immediate transfer which is huge.  Although it is late in the game so most schools do not have any available scholarships to give.

To be fair, I am not 100% convinced many people within the administration actually knew what was going on.  Even those who were central to the investigation might not have really known the details.

Now, I think there were a lot of people who took the "I don't want to know, la la la la la" approach, which is simply unacceptable in the positions they were in.  But I feel like if they actually knew what Sandusky really was, the reaction of many of them would have been different.

That is why I think they need to be struck down by the higher ups for not doing their jobs, and creating a culture of looking the other way.  But I think it is a bit much to strike them down like you are suggesting.

The one aspect where I disagree with you on this is that if they lacked the "instituional control" to properly prevent this, they sure as hell wouldn't have stopped Sandusky from paying off his linebackers.

Let's stick with your last sentence.  I think that is just fine for an argument.  But, you will NEVER win an argument here, or anywhere else in this society, by suggesting in any way that burglary and pedophelia are anything close to equivalent.

But yes, the NCAA is not a court.  Let them deal with sports, and let others deal with crimes.  I am with you on that.

Agreed. Things aren't taking place in a vacuum and things are not clearcut  black and white.

I wasn't trying to suggest they were the same thing, merely that the coverup of a crime would be thought of differently if it was a different crime and that shouldn't be the case.  What if Sandusky was pulling a Bernie Madoff and stealing hundreds of million of dollars from people of all walks of life?  That in turn might affect far more people than he did as a child molester.  Again not as heinous but could be far more wide spread and affect far more people negatively.

Crimes are crimes.  NCAA violations are NCAA violations.  They can be the same thing, but in case they were not.

But you are ignoring the key aspects of the case.

Sandusky used his position with penn state to lure kids in to then rape them.

Penn state allowed them to use their facilities to rape children.

If sandusky did this 100% on his own in his own house the crime being the same but the setting being different this wouldnt be as big of a deal
