While I agree with most of what you said, telling your current employer you'll stay there if they vastly overpay you is being a jerk. There's no way around that. Also, under these circumstances, acting like you're torn about whether to leave or not is a bit disengenuous.

Did Ray leave the Celtics team in a bad position, snub his Celtics teammates and fans? Unequivocally yes.

Did he do what he believed to be the best for himself? Yes

Move on guys, he gave us 5 good years. Cheer him the first time he comes back to the Garden and hope he is not a productive member of the cHeat

Always thought it was really classy of Drew Bledsoe to take out a full page ad in Boston Globe thanking the New England fans when he left. Don't think that has been repeated by any other athlete......

This is what Durant felt like when joining James on the Olympic team.

Apparently Ray doesn't feel any of that.

the closest analogy i can think of to Ray leaving for our biggest archrival in the EC is had Pedro been a free agent in 2003 and left for the Yankees after losing Game 7 of the ALCS in 2003, think that's why so many people are viscerally affected by Ray's decision.

I wonder why you think Ray Allen didn't believe himself to be worth the 9 million per, or that he didn't labor over the decision?
Because he signed for $3m - obviously. Maybe he thinks he's worth $9m, but he's willing to play for $3m, so the $6m difference is "because I like Miami a lot more than Boston."

As for laboring over the decision, have to go by what we've heard reported, just doesn't sound like it.

He did leave Boston in a bad spot and no that's not his problem.

We don't, and probably won't, ever know everything that was done & said between Ray and other celtic players/management.  What we do know is that Ray was shopped for Monta Ellis, OJ Mayo, and probably several more players as well.  In the end, i think that his uncertain future here, mixed with his playoff struggles, family stuff, changing role, and other behind-the-scenes things ultimately lead him to the decision that it was time for something new.

We as fans (and the media) like to simplify arguements with things like "Ray wanted to screw the celtics" or "ray and rondo don't like eachother," but in the end i think it's probably a combination of a lot more than that.

Also, i believe that one of the things he will miss the most and hates to leave behind are us fans - he will learn more about that once he steps on the floor in Miami.  The comments he made after that game 6 loss tells the story.

But ultimately he doesn't owe us fans anything.  He helped bring us a banner, and for that i will stand and cheer my ass off (be it at the game or at home) the very first time he enters the game at the Garden.  He earned that.

From then-after, i will boo him mercilessly.  I think that Ray Allen deserves this and i think he wouldn't want it any other way.

Thank you #20, and may you never see another ring.

Well if he is worried about being traded he better get out of the NBA, because that is part of the business. Miami at some point may want to trade him, any team he goes to would do this.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
People are angry because it's a like a half reality/metaphor signalling the end of the big 3 era- like losing Ray will send us  into another 20 years of hopelessness and that's painful to think about.
Secondly he went to a rival in the East that many of us 'team' enthusiasts in Boston are disgusted at. Funny thing is that Ray already joined two other superstars in coming to Boston- which is what gave the Heat the idea to join in the first place.

Ray is a grown man who gave everything to the Celtics and Boston while he was here. He thought it was time for a change, mostly for reasons we'll never know about- but it's his choice and I'll still be thankful for everything he gave to me and my team. He'll go into the Hall as a Celtic when the dust settles.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

No, he doesn't deserve to get cheered. I hope he gets boo'd straight out of the garden.

Am I the only one who thinks Ray did us a favor?  He might be worth $6 million this year but next year and the year after, at 39 and 40?  Age and miles are going to catch up to him.  For a guy who relies on constant running and energy he is going to hit a wall.  He's already gone downhill significantly in his 5 years, usually relatively worn out or injured by the time the playoffs come.

But who are we to say?

At the end of the day, this man could very well win two rings with MIA...while I hope he doesn't, this IS a possibility.

So IF he wins ring(s) with MIA...and BOS (STILL) chooses NOT to retire his jersey, then I'm sure MIA will.

And Ray Allen would STILL end up in the HOF, regardless.

What I sincerely hope for BOS (and MIA):

1. Is that Ray plays well with MIA

2. Shoots like 25% in every game he plays vs BOS

3. Meets BOS in the ECF next season

4. Thanks to a healthy BOS team with AB, Jet, Jeff Green,
and measurable contributions from Jared, Fab and Joseph
(as well as the USUAL suspects) - we BEAT them.

5. Number 4 is a distinct possibilty - the majority of those
players I listed in #4 are YOUNGER, and I hope less liable
   to injury.

In the end, we lost perhaps the best shooter in the game - someon who stretched the floor for BOS. But he didn't screw us over, per se.

Let's just separate the angst from reality on here.
