What was it Dan Gilbert said about the Washington Generals?

When/if this happens, about 26 NBA teams effectively become the Washington Generals for the next 5 or so years at least.

I disagree.  Kobe may not have five good, healthy years left and Nash certainly doesn't.  They'll be good enough these next couple of seasons to draft late in the first round where impact players are rare so once Nash and Kobe fade away they'll be the Orlando Magic.  I see that happening in less then five years time.

And then their older player's (Nash, Kobe, Pau) contracts will expire and every free agent will want to go to LA to play with Dwight Howard and the Los Angeles Lakers ... and then they'll have a new era of title contention.

The Lakers aren't owned by a billionaire who can pay the luxury tax out of what he keeps in his cookie jar.  I don't think many people fully appreciate how the much tougher tax is going to affect teams that need to dump salary and teams that try to take on big contracts.  The days when top teams can just forget about the draft are coming to an end.

Mike

The Lakers just signed a new $3 billion TV contract.  I think you underestimate their resources.

How does this improve Orlando's situation? Bynum, like Howard, will be a ufa after the season. Is there any evidence that Bynum has any more interest in re-signing with Orlando than Howard had?
This is why I think the deal, along with LA's lack of picks, isn't a certainty.

If you're Orlando, swapping Howard for Bynum doesn't really solve ANY of the problems with your roster or your salary structure.

Mike

Orlando isn't getting an even exchange for Dwight Howard.  Such a player, outside of LeBron James, doesn't exist.  Bynum is the closest available.

Bynum, World Peace, McRoberts, Eyenga for Dwight, Hedo, Duhon works. Saves Orlando at least $15 million total too.

The Buss family only has one business, one source of income, the Lakers.

They have to support all of the family, who probably all waste tons of money on their lifestyle, from that. So I think its fair to say that they will be wary of the new super luxury tax more than Dolan or the BKN russian billionare.

There was a report a few days ago that said Orlando would only trade for Bynum if he agreed to a contract extension prior to the trade. So that's that.

Andrew Bynum doesn't care where he plays. "There is a bank in every city", that was Bynum's response to moving from LA. He will go to whomever pays him to play. So he is happy to sign a new contract. Presumably it'll take a max contract given his size/position and play last season.

It doesn't solve their issues though, they get out of one bad contract and maybe get another star center to build around. They get no other piece and no other talent to work with. That's a problem as it won't take long for Bynum to get frustrated.

They could save $19 million by simply letting Dwight walk.

It solves their main issue though - remaining interesting. Not every team needs to compete for a title every year. The same goes for players. If Bynum gets gaudy stats and gets to start in the all star game every year, I think he will be fine with that scenario.

Getting Bynum for a Howard that is already determined to leave while also shedding Hedo is a great situation for them.

On the other hand, Howard really blew it with his player option. A sign and trade as a free agent would have resulted in a better deal than signing an extension before a trade to the Lakers. This is the problem with sentimentality in contract negotiations.

As if dynasties are something new in the NBA.

The NBA has always been the same teams winning over and over again.

That's a pretty ghastly scenario for Orlando.

The $200 million that they will take in from that local TV contract every year alone can cover plenty of that bill and give the Buss kids a livable income.

I hate the Lakers. But as a fan of watching the best basketball I can, Howard to LA has me a little excited. I'm already digging the Nash pick up. The Lakers will at least be very entertaining.

Bynum is probably the best that Orlando can get in return. He is the 2nd best young center in the entire league by a long shot.

I was wondering how well Nash and Bynum would work together. Flipping Bynum for Howard would be lob heaven. Nash running an offense with Pau, Kobe, and Howard would be amazing theater. Howard could also erase a lot of Nash matador defense mistakes.

This is the key. Howard's ability to defend the rim will make things much harder for Westbrook types. That will be a huge change. Bynum's side to side speed is slower. Yet Bynum is bigger and just as effective for lobs. Bynum also has much better post and shooting skills.

The Lakers definitely need Howard's defense more than they need Bynum's offense.  All of Bynum's post offense possessions are replaceable on a team with Nash, Kobe, and Gasol.
