Exactly. Him getting that number jeopardizes resigning key vets like Wilcox and Pietrus, which I'm sure Danny is aware of as well. He would be mad to give Green such an exorbitant offer.
I'm sorry but I can't accept that Wilcox should ever be considered a 'key'. The dude has been around a long time and has always been injury prone and mediocre. Considering how many young bigs we have now, they really need to get minutes after a full training camp. Wilcox is also so mediocre and injury prone that he won't demand much money.

I would also rather have Green that Pietrus. I want someone on the way up. not sure Pietrus will get much money either.

Yea pretty much. If it comes down to overpaying a bit for Green at the risk of a Wilcox type, then do it. I'll take my chances that a our rookies can play the Wilcox role.

I really don't see how overpaying Green to this amount affects Wilcox in any way. We don't have Bird Rights for him, or any of the sort. He would be available at the BAE, and that's about it other than vet min. I think we'd still be enough under the Apron to offer that.

Pietrus, well has some other exceptions we can use, but we can't go high with him either if I recall correctly.

So, Green really doesn't come into play particularly if the difference between staying or not is a 6-7 million contract vs. the speculated 9 million or so.

Danny has to stay below $72M. The higher the contract received by Jeff Green, the less flexibility the Celtics have to sign free agents (even if those FA's rights are controlled by the Celtics).
Celtics fan for life.

green gets that kind of money..no way ray is coming back..not even close..not sure we can fill out the bench with pietrus, wilcox, etc

Interesting the numbers work if Green starts at 9 mil.

Rondo 11
Pierce 16.8
KG 11
Sully 1.3
Melo 1.3
Terry 5
Joseph 0.5
JJ 1.1
Avery 1.6

Thats 49.6/ 9 players

Add Ray at 6, Bass at 6.5, Green at 9:

71.1 / 12 players.

That gives the C's about 2.9 to retain: Moore 0.8, Sean Williams 0.9 &
sign Pietrus or Stiemsma at 1.2

74 / 15

Man my instinct was to walk away from the Green deal. But I really want him on the team. The Celtics could really use him against Lebron. If the C's want to win the title, they have to go through Miami.

Bass checked LeBron well enough. No one athlete in the game can stop LeBron. It needs a collective team effort. Quite frankly at this price I would walk away from Green and wave him goodbye.

Bass's defense on Lebron was impressive. And thats 1 of many reason's I am glad Bass is returning. However if Bass or Pierce go down, the C's need more depth to have a fighting chance. I don't know if Pietrus / Sullinger will be enough to cover those 2 positions.

I am also in the camp that Green is going to be better after a full camp. I think he was too worried about fitting in and wasn't as aggressive as he could have been on offense. Also he won't be playing PF alongside Baby at C.

Anyway, I really hope the final number is closer to 7.5 or 8 per year.

I bet it is.  Can't see it averaging over $8.5M.

I'm aware of that, that's I made an allusion to the "apron". But we're as limited as it is in what we can offer players. Whatever deal Danny makes I'm confident that it'll be under enough so that we can still use the BAE exception on someone like Wilcox (which is the most we can offer him anyways if my calculations are correct).

For Pietrus, we're left with vet minimum (which again I very much assume Danny Ainge has planned to be under enough to offer at least that much) or actually using the BAE on him. I don't think we can offer him any more regardless. And his importance is directly correlated on whether we sign Ray or not. If we don't, then we'll have plenty of room to sign people (just not much beyond vet minimum anyways), and if Ray does return, then Pietrus is not important.

I do think we can use non-Bird rights on Pietrus though, which I think would come to $1.7 million or so. I think we'd be under enough for that, and again its importance is directly correlated to Ray signing or not.

So all I'm saying is that the 2 or 3 million a year people are crying about really doesn't factor much into our ability to solidify the roster.

Unless my calculations are wrong, which they may just be as I haven't crunched the numbers.

Anything over 4/$36m and the Cs got played by Falk.  I can't believe the Celtics are going to fork over that kind of money to a middling player coming off open heart surgery.
