More time goes by, I'm jsut getting more perplexed. He's ONLY getting paid on draft position pedigree. He's 25 already, he's had multiple situations and plenty of minutes to develop. He has no position and is a below average rebounder, defender, shooter, scorer, shot creator for self and others. And in 4 years, his PER has barely changed at all and stayed, every year, below average. This is not a 10 mil per year player!

I agree.  I don't mind the re-signing (hate the $$, but don't HATE the player), but that's only because he's better than guys like Rashard Lewis or Quis who are the alternative.

The player we saw in Boston was almost exactly the same player that OKC saw for several seasons, whether you look at the basic stats or any of the advanced ones.  He's played a lot, he played three seasons in college, there's no reason to expect him to suddenly morph into the new Paul Pierce.

He's a decent player, but doesn't just do any one thing particularly well.  To me, he's the basketball equivalent of an innings-eating fourth starter.  So congrats, the Celtics have just signed the basketball John Lackey.

  • It's all about the TEAM!
I don't know how you can go from $9 million and then miss a complete year with a life threatening condition and come back and sign an even better contract for 4 years. If anything, I thought his value would be down and we'd get him back at a discount, not up.

No wonder he wanted to stay with us. I'm not sure what they see so much in him. I would have had a hard time with paying him half that much. I want to see the kid is healthy and playing well before you give him THAT kind of money.

I'd rather see you offer that kind of money (not years) to Ray.

He's young so his contract should be highly tradeable...

I'm expecting it to be closer to 8mill a year though...this is just speculation "sources believe it may"

I can see fitting well in the near term and long term future of the team.  He can be a good complement to either Pierce or Bass at forward.  He is athletic, runs the floor well, and his defense is decent.  While 10mm per is rich, it is not ridiculous.

I think the 4 years, 40 million is going to come to fruition.

Quote
A 4-year deal for Jeff Green starting at $9 mil/yr with max 7.5% raises = 40,256,400.

This deal, if struck, is runner-up for worst deal of this offseason behind Asik's deal.

Let's not go overboard. Landry Fields' deal is definitely the worst.

Totally agree with tgro. I thought $9 was a bonus amount the Cs were paying because it was only a one year deal. And that was before missing a year to heart surgery. Long term, I see him as a $6-7 mil a year player. He can play 25-30 minutes, give you good wing defense, score 10 points without using a lot of shots and grab 4-5 boards. He's totally useful as a 25 year old big wing who can defend and run the floor. I just think this contract matches people's unrealistic expectation that he's going to be a much better player than he was in his half season in Boston, at least offensively. But that's what he is. His per minute numbers were the same in Boston as in OKC in 2010-11. He shot better and so actually scored just a little more. But that's what he is. I liked what I saw in his time in Boston - a guy who played good wing defense, knocked down some open looks and gave 10 bench points a night in 24 minutes. But what I saw wasn't a $10 mil a year player. It was a good rotation player with value up to $7 mil a year due to his youth.

I hope this isn't the contract. I do think Green contributes and improves this team, but he will not give the numbers that are going to be expected from a $10 million player. Because it's not him. If this is the money, I think there's massive potential for this to become an extremely regrettable move by early 2014 when they're trapped with two and a half more years and $25 million on a contract they can't trade (teams aren't lining up to take long term contracts with eight figure salaries paid to role players), and people are abusing and jeering Green because the money he gets paid does not match his numbers. This is how good players can get broken by bad contracts.
Go Celtics.

Interesting the numbers work if Green starts at 9 mil.

Rondo 11
Pierce 16.8
KG 11
Sully 1.3
Melo 1.3
Terry 5
Joseph 0.5
JJ 1.1
Avery 1.6

Thats 49.6/ 9 players

Add Ray at 6, Bass at 6.5, Green at 9:

71.1 / 12 players.

That gives the C's about 2.9 to retain: Moore 0.8, Sean Williams 0.9 &
sign Pietrus or Stiemsma at 1.2

74 / 15

Man my instinct was to walk away from the Green deal. But I really want him on the team. The Celtics could really use him against Lebron. If the C's want to win the title, they have to go through Miami.

Bass checked LeBron well enough. No one athlete in the game can stop LeBron. It needs a collective team effort. Quite frankly at this price I would walk away from Green and wave him goodbye.

Yeah.

Guys...Jeff Green will get $8M on the open market, guaranteed.  He's at least as valuable as Bass, but in my opinion (and I believe most GMs would agree) he is a better all around player.  He is 25, still yet to hit his NBA prime.

The fans on this board who think Green will sign for $6M or less are nuts.  He can get way more than that from another team.

And yes...Landry Fields signing for $7M per doesn't help us out at all, because Green is light years better than him.

I'll only speak for myself - I didn't think he'd sign for $6 mil or less, and I don't begrudge him the right to take as much money as he can get. NBA careers are short, as he knows even more now. Gotta cash in while he can. That doesn't make him worth the $10 mil though. I think in the long run, getting $10 mil a year hurts him. Adding that extra digit to the salary is huge because of the expectations attached to it. $8 mil a year - which is what you said he'd get on the market - now that's a manageable, more appropriate salary for him. I think his value is $6-7, but I'd have little issue paying $8-8.5. $10 is a lot more than that.
Go Celtics.

Exactly. Him getting that number jeopardizes resigning key vets like Wilcox and Pietrus, which I'm sure Danny is aware of as well. He would be mad to give Green such an exorbitant offer.
