Now I know this couldn't happen on draft night because the only players under contract are PP,Rondo ,Bradley,Johnson,Moore  , but I was wondering how long do you have to wait to trade players after you draft them(and don't trade them on draft night)?


I am thinking a deal of

S+T Bass, #21 Royce White and # 22 and filler might be able to land Josh Smith. The deal breaker to me would be including Bradley to that package .

Josh Smith is on his last year of his deal and has already made it known for the past few years that he wants to leave Atlanta. He is also best friends with Rondo and played in high school with him as we all know .

So do you think a trade like that could land us Josh Smith ?

PG: Rondo    / Vet min
SG: Bradley  / Ray
SF: PP       / Green
PF: Smith    / Wilcox
 C: KG       / Steamer

Not bad, but I think we need a better backup big man, maybe camby?

I'm pretty sure you can trade drafted players right away as draft night deals happen all the time.

I too think Josh Smith would be a great pickup but that Polly means Wilcox is not resigned.  I also don't see Ray being resigned here.  There's only so much money to go around.

Rondo, Bradley, Green, Smith would be a good core to build around.

To answer your question about trading draft picks, they can be traded at any time up until they are signed.  After that there is a waiting period (6 months???).

You are correct about the Celtics being in a difficult position as far as it comes to draft day trades though.  Sign and trades cannot be completed until after the July moratorium  (7th maybe???).

Honestly though, I'm not sure Atlanta would have any interest in Bass.  And I don't think the 21st & 22nd picks would be enough on their own.  I'd be surprised if Atlanta deals Smith before the season starts anyways.  They should, but the management team down there doesn't seem to bright.

I don't see why Atlanta would be interested in that trade. From various reports, it looks like there are a number of teams willing to sell off first round picks in that range, and why should they trade for Bass? He's an unrestricted FA.

Yes, I understand Smith will likely leave atlanta at the end of his deal, but if the Hawks wait, they can get someone to pay much more for him. He's still young.

I think the celtics can get Smith, but not for that package. You would have to add Bradley to make it happen.

We can't unless Bass signs for near Josh Smith. Remember that we're over the cap, unless we renounce players.

No way would I offer Atlanta that much for Smith.  He is going to be a FA next off-season.  Atlanta might be able to get more than a guy like Bass and a couple picks, but I don't think your're going to see any big offers come there way either.

A lot depends o whether or not Smith has a desired destination.  So far, I haven't heard any definitive statement from him other than he wants out of Atlanta.  If he does have a desired destination, Atlanta will be in big trouble, especially if that destination is a team that will have cap space next year.

yea the smart thing is probably just to wait until the off-season and see if we can sign him without giving up any assets .

As has been discussed in multiple other threads, Green cannot be used in a S&T.

But yeah, if the cost is Bradley AND our picks, I'd rather wait.

I wouldn't go that far. I think Bradley, the picks, and filler could get it done, considering Smith is leaving Atlanta at the end of his deal.

With that said, Rondo and Smith are great friends. I really think we can sign him as a FA if we wait.

Thus the reason why it would be foolish to offer Bradley.  Atlanta has very little leverage it seems.

Another thing to consider is; a deal involving Bradley, picks and filler would have to include quite a bit of filler to make the salaries work.

Bradley and our 2 picks is only a combined $4m aprroximately.  Josh Smith will be making $13.2m next season.  We'd need to include another $6.5m in salary to make the deal work, unless we renounce everyone.

Josh Smith would be so effective with the Celtics. A guy like KG to keep him motivated. A guy like Rondo to feed him easy hoops so he doesnt worry to much about offense. His shot blocking and rebounding would be huge...especially against someone like Miami.

Look at it like this...

The Heat may start Bosh at C and keep LeBron at PF. The best counter is KG at C (like he's been playing) and a Josh Smith type PF. A guy athletic enough to at least make it a challenge for LeBron (in comparison to everyone else).

You can pack the paint with those guys.
