What about this:

Atlanta trades Josh Smith and #23
Houston trades Dalembert, Marcus Morris, and #16

Atlanta finally gets a C to allow Horford to move to PF, moves up in the draft, and unloads an unhappy Smith.

Houston gets a talent upgrade at PF. They can then look to move Scola and parts (Lowry?) to LA for Gasol.
much more realistic deal but Houston would probably have to part with #14 instead (or possibly in addition to #16)

Why would Atlanta have to throw in #23?  Marcus Morris has about as much trade value as JJJ at this point. Had maybe the worst season of any of last year's first rounders.

Houston sends #16 to Boston
Boston sends #21 and #22 to Houston
Houston then trades #22 and Dalembert to the Lakers for their LO trade exception.

Houston wants to get rid of Dalembert, LA wants to get in the first round, Boston looking to move up in the draft.

Houston looking to move Dalembert, but I don't think that necessarily means they're looking to give anything up to move him.

Dalembert is 7 million this season, 7 million next. There are a lot of teams out there who would jump pretty high at the chance to get a starting defensive center at 7 million for 1 more season.

Where are you getting that salary info.  What I have seen, he is on the books for just $7 million (ish) next season...and that is only guaranteed for $1.5 million.  Making him a very valuable (essentially) expiring contract.

My guess is they are trying to use him to move up, by taking on someones bad contract.

I phrased that wrong. By this season I meant like..now. THe one that is almost over.

So next season its 7 million, I didn't even know it was partially guaranteed.

Ah, right.  Basically, the bottom line is that Dalembert is guaranteed $1.5 million, but can be traded for a salary of $10.5 million.  That is very valuable.

Yeah wow that's a great asset and great contract for Houston.  Morey with another smart move.

I have soured a fair bit on Dalembert over the last two seasons.

I think he has lost quite a bit of quickness and agility. Physical decline.

What are the situations where they can put this into use?
One possibility, as mentioned above by others, is a team like Atlanta with an unhappy star but does Houston would probably have to move picks #14 AND #16 or move Lowry/Martin with one of the picks.
New Orleans would've been a good option as they could've shed Ariza's contract for just 1.5 million and taken Houston's 14 for 10 but Wizards took away BOTH their bad contracts and allowed them to keep their picks for "just" $14 million.
LA could absorb Dalembert with their T.E. but they don't have any assets to offer Houston.  Houston can trade for Gasol similar to Smith. Scola, Dalembert, #14 and Kevin Martin for Gasol and T.E. or something like that.

He does lumber a bit more than he used to but he's still a fine rebounder and shot-blocker and a decent finisher.

I think the trade would be Dalembert and number 16 to Portland for number 11.

I thought you were suggesting a trade that would bring Dalembert to Boston. Darn.  :(

Why would Portland do that? They dumped Camby last season for better draft position; now they'd give it up for Dalembert?

Sorry.  We would have to trade a lot of salary for that.  I don't see Houston being high on any of our FA's except KG.

Both firsts to move up 5 spots? Danny would have to be really hot for someone on the board at that point.

I was thinking of a straight deal between LA and Houston, involving Dallie and the #16 (and sweetener) for Gasol.

Lakers will be trying to create space in the paint for Bynum if anything. Adding another big 7 footer when they were too big and slow this season wouldn't be on their radar.

Luxury tax bailout. They can then cut Dallie, and save millions.

So essentially you're saying one of the richest teams in the league would be trading Pau Gasol for a mid teens pick and luxury tax relief?

Gasol has regressed but not that much...
