pre-meditated assault and battery is the same wherever you go...whether it is on the street...in the hood...on an nba court...on nhl ice...if this was not so...then...how and why are nhl players being prosecuted in court and nba players are not...that is a double standard...
You're talking about two main incidences in the last 20 years, neither of which have occurred within the last 8 years, and IIRC, both of which happened in Canada.
They're different sports, with different organizations, so I don't think they're by any means judged by the same standard, and, it happened in another country, AND both incidences resulted in grievous injury.
There is no double standard here, they're not remotely relevant.
