I guess the rumors were true about Ray this is from Woj he's usually pretty credible. It's crazy Allen actually got a call that he was gone. It's also crazy to think Pierce could have been gone wouldn't have been thrilled with that.

Quote

NEW YORK – As the NBA trade deadline lurched into its final hour a month ago, league sources say the call Ray Allen long feared had come: Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers was on the line, telling him he had been traded. Allen had been sent to the Memphis Grizzlies for a package including O.J. Mayo and a draft pick, and the Celtics' Big Three had come to a most brusque ending.
For 20 minutes or so, Allen had to process the information. They traded me to Memphis? And yet, as the disappointment dissolved to anger, Rivers returned with a messenger’s nightmare: Never mind. The deal fell apart. Take a deep breath and let’s go back to work again.

Before the Big Three could make it past the trade deadline, Allen-to-the-Grizzlies had to fall apart and discussions on a deal that would have sent Paul Pierce to the New Jersey Nets for an expiring Mehmet Okur contract and a lottery pick never reached completion, league sources said. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge loves the talent in the 2012 NBA draft, but he still gets one more run, one more chance with this group in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

I can understand RayRay for OJ, but Pierce for Okur and a pick?!
When you lose, the easy part is to see who gives up. Giving up is very simple. You basically take your stuff and walk away. To continue to work and to continue to compete is one of the most difficult things, especially when you really don't have anything - KG

Wow. If this is true that's kind of weird. Ray was a Grizzly for 20 minutes and Mayo was a Celtics for 20 mins as well. ha.

Not this year, its Portland's.

And for that reason, I call shenanigans on this report.

what are you taking about, the Celtics would have made the trade that Portland made.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Im glad the Ray to memphis fell apart for the sole reason that Avery would have never exploded like he has this second half of the season.

The realist in me wishes the Pierce trade had happened. In terms of celtics history and player loyalty I hate it but it would have helped this team. The Cs would have gained a top 8 pick in a deep draft to go along with the two picks they already have. Draftexpress currently has the 7th picking being Harison Barnes.

I would have liked the opposite to have happened. I would have loved to see the Mayo trade god down, especially if the draft choice coming our way would have been their 1st rd pick this year. I think Bradley would have developed just the same, as his minutes would've still be high playing alongside Rondo and Mayo in a young highly athletic 3 guard rotation.

The Pierce trade I would not be too fond with. Perhaps if Green were healthy I would feel differently, but I can't but think that KG would have never played the way he is currently playing without Pierce. It really would have been a downward spiral to our season for the potential of a  draft pick that might not ever develop. Way too much risk there for my liking.

Very good points here, but OJ Mayo is not athletic. Other than that, I can almost agree with every other stuff.
You don't want to give up your leading scorer and captain for a talent-wise unproven young player.

I do think Mayo is really athletic. At the combine he had a 41 inch vert, 30.5 inch vert (no step), 11.04 lane agility, and 3/4 court sprint of 3.14. By comparison, Bradley had a 37.5, 31.5, 11.47, and 3.14 in the same cats.

I've always found his game too streaky to buy into, but those numbers you gave are for sure pretty competitive. Interesting, though. I don't remember him showing much of an athleticism on court. Maybe I missed them or in a fair opinion, it's not just about highlights :)

OJ is athletic,

Trading pierce would have put a nail in the coffin for this season but it would have jump started the future. If the Draft lottery went our way we could have potentially ended up with say T Robinson. Next year the Cs could field a lineup of

Rondo
Bradly
Green
Robinson
Steimsma

Then our pick would have probably fallen to the teens with the loss of pierce.
