I think the talent is worth the risk if we can trade for him this offseason. Maybe a sign n trade of Bass and JJJ. Thrown in a 2nd rounder maybe. I'll take a gamble on talent and see if we can fit it in. I just look at him and I see a kid who can be a more efficient in a halfcourt offense with more structure than ATL's iso offense. He could be great on pick n rolls which IMO he's not utilized enough on. I think it will also keep him closer to the rim utilized that way where he can be more effective there. And he's a stone cold killer in transition feeding him lobs all day. I think here he could take his game to that next level on a team with more accountability and consistency and I think he could get that here.

How about something like this after free agency starts and after the Celtics get actual cap room:

Utah gets - Avery Bradley, JaJuan Johnson, Bos 2013 1st
Atlanta gets - Al Jefferson, E'twaun Moore
Boston gets - Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Earl Watson

Why...pray why...would we do that trade?  Are you Otis Smith in disguise on CelticBlog?
So let me get this straight.  The Celtics get the best player in the trade (who is a borderline all star), they get a quality 3/4 6th man type player, and a backup PG and give up a borderline starter, two guys in suits most nights, and a future 1st round pick.  Seems like a pretty good deal for Boston if you ask me.

I would cut out Atlanta and go for Jefferson.

I just don't see Utah taking that package.
I'd probably be ok with that, but Jefferson is actually older than Smith and his defense is still terrible.  In addition he is paid more than Smith is.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Much rather go after Ryan Anderson than Smith.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Josh Smith is a terrible player to build around, and I can't believe people here still are infatuated with him.

The guy takes a couple of 3s a game despite shooting 26% this season, he constantly freezes out his own pg (see last loss against the celtics) and pouts and moans whenever he doesn't get his way. Oh, and he is 27 years old. He is not going to suddenly "get it."

I don't think anyone claims Smith is a centerpiece of a team but like Rondo he could be a solid core contributor moving forward. You say he froze his pg out in Boston. What I saw was him showing his versatility because AB and Rondo locked down Teague with good defense.

People in Orlando said Bass wouldn't get it. People said Paul wouldn't get it. I think there is sufficient evidence to show things can change.

No thanks, Imagine Smith with Rondo on the court late game. We'd get hacked and sent to the line and destroyed. No shooting either. JSmith has reached his ceiling. Forget him. Guy has no bball IQ and he's one injury away from becoming a poor man's PJ Brown.

The same PJ Brown that helped us win a title in 2008?

You guys seem to think the reason we would bring Smith in is to take over the face of the franchise and thats not the case at all... Smith would be our 3rd even 4th option if we also were able to resign KG. Having him next to KG on the defensive end would be beyond stellar. And a guy that can put up 19 a game and be a 4th option is a no brainer.

Imagine the defense we would have with a starting lineup of

Rondo, Bradley, Pierce, Smith, and KG?

Having our 6th and 7th men be Green and Bass. Add a bruiser banger center and that is a team I would love to go to battle with. KG as a mentor to Smith is a scary thought if I have to play the C's.

That would be an intimidating defensive unit to start a game out with. Then you bring guys like Stiemer and Pietrus off the bench. Don't see how we could get Smith without giving up Bass. Either way, a scary defensive group that could turn teams over and capitalize in transition.

This. never been a fan of his game. I'd rather have the old Kaman, Ilyasova, Anderson, Hawes or heck even Humpries next year.

As much as I'd love to engage on the continuous CelticsBlog Josh Smith debate, I'll take a different tactic.

4 pages of comments, and not one person has corrected his nickname? It's "J Smoove," not "J Smooth."

If we can't get his name right, I'm quite sure that we don't deserve him.  ;)

I suppose you're the guy who gets irritated by the "proof is in the pudding" idiom and whenever you see Lebron or Amare.

I don't understand how you can NOT be infatuated with him.  His one of the best help defenders of the past 5-10 years, he rebounds at an excellent rate for a smaller PF, he's a willing passer, still has that explosiveness, and he's even getting better as an on-ball defender.

I see 2 issues with JSmoove:
1) He's never been on a veteran-laden team
2) He's being asked to do far too much for a depleted Hawks team.

Maybe his pouting never changes and if so, that's really too bad, but man i would absolutely love to see him on the same team as KG and and Rondo, without hesitation.

However people feel about Josh Smith is their right, I suppose.

But I think that at times we are a bit harsh about certain players.

Back in the day, no one would touch Jeff Green with a 10-ft pole.

Now? We love him.

It's not like Dwight, Deron, etc - are beating down the doors trying to get to BOS.

CP3 "Wanted no part of BOS."

DWest inexplicably went with the supposedly stylish Pacers over us.

If we can't get Bass or Jeff Green back then I'd certainly like to see Josh here.

I bet we'd grow to love him rather quickly after a few blocks and lobs.....and after a time under Doc's tutelage he'd offer MUCH more than that eventually.

Please allow me to retort to your two issues with Josh Smith:

1. WHAT!!!!!!!

2009-10 Hawks

Mike Bibby - 11 years experience
Jason Collins - 8 years experience
Jamal Crawford - 9 years experience
Maurice Evans - 6 years experience
Joe Johnson - 8 years experience
Zaza Pachulia - 6 years experience
Joe Smith - 14 years experience
Josh Smith - 5 years experience
Marvin Williams - 4 years experience

Not only was this team experienced it was talented as it also had young players Al Horford and Jeff Teague on the team.

2. When exactly has Smith been asked to shoulder too large a load on that Hawks team? Joe Johnson has been extremely healthy since arriving in Atlanta and except for this year, Horford has as well. There's also been Crawford, Bibby, Teague, Williams, Pachulia and Hinrich that have been regular contributors there over the years.

Smith, simply put, likes to shoot and likes to shoot from outside. But he's not very good at it. He loves to play weak side defense and rack up blocked shots and steals from cheating off his man. There is, after all, a reason he averages lots of steals and blocks and yet has only made one 2nd team All-Defense Team. It's because he has the ability to be a great defender but instead concentrates on the spectacular play instead of the smart play.

But Nick - would you attribute your assessment of Josh Smith to him?

Or the coaches he's had?

1)  He is payed to much.  At 12 million a year, the player needs to be top 5 player at his position.  He isn't.  (Dirk, Love, Gasol, Aldridge, Griffin, Randolph, Bosh)
2)  He is a on a veteran laded team the past few seasons.  ( players on the team are 30 and over.
