ugh! In half court game, Rajon Rondo+Josh Smith lineup would be disaster. Rondo is best when he surrounded by shooters. He has space to operate and wreak havoc on defenses. If you can't make 15footer on regular bases, then NO WAY

When I'm giving a thought to next season's team, I generally tend to find a formula to move KG back to his own spot, as I do believe he may want out of Celtics if they demand him to play center another season. This is a possibility and I haven't been able to figure it out. I doubt I will anytime soon.
I brought this up just to state that trading for a PF may not be the starting point of the rebuilding.
Therefore, I believe that Kaman or some other big that you can trust should be added to the team somehow, preferably through free agency, but there won't be many options available.

In an NBA.com article before the trade deadline, a trade idea was centered around Rondo and Smith, so, it's not wise to think that a couple of second or third string guys would cut it.

Would a 1st rounder (in a good draft) + Marquis + Hollins suffice?

Daniels and Hollins are free agents after this season, so can't be traded.

I'm not a fan of Josh Smith becoming a Celtic because I expect him to have a more infuriating shot selection than Antoine Walker.
I think Bass was known as no pass bass and was shooting every ball that passed through his hand pushing the Magic to trade him away... we know how well it works out for us! Even D ROse had a questionable shoot selection has he was working on extending his range... All I'm saying is that Josh Smith could work better in our system if Doc, Rondo and KG can channel him into making the right decision within the offense! The numbers talk for him! He is a bordeline all star with great athleticism, very young, improved shooting, shotblocking force who can switch on PnR and can run with rondo!
As for trading FA Daniels and hollins, I thought we signed and traded FA Big Baby and Wafer to get Bass... is that not an option anymore...?????

Once we do finally hit the post big three era, the one and ONLY thing I will not miss about Kevin Garnett being on this team, is this notion that we can take on any kind of problem player from around the league and KG will just whip him right into shape.

Even if this theory is true in Josh Smiths case, how long do we expect KG to be on this team??  The kind of player we should be looking for is the type of guy with a personality like KG's that can carry on the In your Face, All Work, All Practice, All Business mentality.
And of course you will come up with a name of such perfect player that would be available for us next year!! Right..? So let me ask you: What is the name of the player that can produce and be KG like that is available for us..?????

I would try to keep KG at C.  He plays at a high level at C much higher than he does at PF.  I would try to get a hometown deal.

I think Rondo could play better with some guys who run actually.   Yeah he needs shooters but look at how well he and Bradley play together and with the guys who run.  I think Smith would run with them too.   Draft guys who can run and catch and finish.  Jumpers can be taught to some degree but athletic ability cannot be taught.  I see some potential to run for us with the right personnel.

I would let Ray walk unless we can get him on the cheap.  Go with Rondo and Bradley as our backcourt.

fair enough, KG is a once in a generation player.  but I think you may be missing my point. I'm trying to say that just because KG is here it doesnt mean we need to go out and acquire players with questionable work ethics and character just because he could whip them into shape.

....and as far as the future goes, Yes, Garnett is irreplaceable.  However, the way to keep the winning attitude, high work ethic, bust your butt in practice mentality going after he leaves is to bring in players who won't slouch and slack off as soon an opportunity arises.

Which is another reason why someone might like bringing in a player like Paul Milsap instead of a player like Josh Smith.

how do we match salaries for J Smooth if we're already over the cap re-signing KG, Ray, Bass, Pietrus and Jeff Green?

Edit:  It's post number 5000 for me.  This post needs more LarBrd33 borderline insulting snark.  Here's my impression of most Celtic fans:

Celtic fan #1 - "Trade ATL E'Tawn More straight up for JSmooth, son"...
Celtic fan #2 - "NO WAY do you give up E'Twaun Moore for Josh Smith.  Kid's a stah.  6'7 Larry Bird.  Book it"

How about something like this after free agency starts and after the Celtics get actual cap room:

Utah gets - Avery Bradley, JaJuan Johnson, Bos 2013 1st
Atlanta gets - Al Jefferson, E'twaun Moore
Boston gets - Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Earl Watson

Why...pray why...would we do that trade?  Are you Otis Smith in disguise on CelticBlog?

I actually think we are a JSmooz trade away from ruining this team for a long, long time.

He's young. He'll want max money for the next 7-8 years. He's a chucked and not a very good one at that. And he is a horrible FT shooter.

Avoid Josh Smith at all costs.

Tony Mitchell looks like a smoother shooting Josh Smith right now.

You can't without trading some one like KG or Rondo back.

Given the situation in Atlanta with Joe Johnson and eating up the money with huge salary and the new owners unwilling to break the bank for Josh Smith, what do you guys think it would take for us to pair RR and his budy JSmooth...?
Would a 1st rounder (in a good draft) + Marquis + Hollins suffice?
I wouldn't mind even throwing there JJJ if that can bring us JSmooth!

if we can add green and bring back the gang together we could have a scary deep team :

Rondo / Dooling / Moore
Bradley / Ray / Pietrus
Green / Pierce / Pavlovic
JSmooth / Bass / JJJ (Or Wilcox if he can come back or any FA)
Stiemboat / KG / 1st Rounder

If Steimsma and Green play well enough to relegate KG and PP to the bench then we'll cruise to the title with or without Smith.

You have just mentioned the untouchable guys at that specific position. Congratulations! :)
LA slightly ahead of Love in my book, with Gasol following them. Bosh will come to the finish fourth, and Ibaka, fifth. Ibaka's shot blocking is good, but Bosh, even though he can't play against opposition, can be a 20/10 player on a lottery team. I'm not that high on Blake Griffin, he doesn't bring very much to the table in half-court offense, so, Smith may end up as sixth.
Anyone I forgot to mention?

Oh, I got it! Millsap! And God, Dirk, of course. Forget about that list altogether, I screwed it up badly!

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Josh Smith = enigma

Can't figure him out.  Is he just a trade away from being a dominant pf?  Or as someone posted is he antoine walker except he is in shape?  If a sign & trade of Bass and filler would work so be it.  His lack of low post game wouldn't help, we are already a jump shooting team.  If we didn't have kg at center and bradley cutting we'd be back where we were at mid season.

He is a good player but not the sort I'd break the bank to get

So, you remember Antoine Walker as an out of shape version of Josh Smith? Geez, talk about disrespect. I am a fan of Josh Smith and would actually be a fan of bringing him here for the right prive, but Antoine has more leadership and bball iq in his pinky than Smith has ever had. The disrespect for Antoine around here just drives me nuts sometimes. He, not Pierce, was our best player for a number of years...
