I know everyone hates Kobe and I know he takes a lot of shots, but the guy is simply amazing.

He had a very good game, but IMO shot jacked towards the end to bring his stats up. As a fan of his, I'm Ok with it because I just like watching him play well, but it is what it is.

Just took a look at the stats for the start of the season, and here's what I think the standings for regular season awards look like so far:

MVP Watch:

1. LeBron
2. Kevin Durant
3. Derrick Rose
4. Kobe Bryant
5. Dwight Howard

Sixth Man:

1. James Harden
2. Lou Williams
3. Thaddeus Young
4. Ricky Rubio
5. Al Harrington

Rookie of the Year:
(10 listed because it's a weak field)

1. Kyrie Irving
2. Ricky Rubio
3. MarShon Brooks
4. Markief Morris
5. Iman Shumpert
6. Kawhi Leonard
7. Jon Leuer
8. Derrick Williams
9. Tristan Thompson
10. Kemba Walker

DPOY:

1. Dwight Howard
2. Andre Iguodala
3. Josh Smith
4. LeBron James
5. Luol Deng

That's odd, I was just thinking that this year's rookie class looked a lot deeper than anyone expected.  I'd put Brandon Knight somewhere on that list, toward the bottom.  And Chandler Parsons has a good case too.

I'd say the draft has been deeper than expected, but mainly because there seem to be a lot of solid role players.  So far, there don't appear to be any superstars, and only two truly high value players in Irving and Rubio.

As for Knight, I think he's probably on the cusp of that list (interchangeable with Thompson or Walker, and Parsons has played well but he's come on a little bit later than the others.

Is it too early to say that both Utah and New Orleans were done big favors by Deron Williams and Chris Paul?

decent pun: favors

yeah, it is.

though i would agree in the sense that I think both teams had probably reached their peak with those players.

I think in Utah's case we can say they're better off now than if they'd kept Williams, though it's a hard argument to make since we can't know what free agents would have been added, etc...

But Utah now seems stacked.  They're winning games with a seeming frontcourt of the future on the bench (Kanter, Favors).  I mean, too early to annoint, but what team would be unhappy with Kanter and Favors in the wings...

Utah looks like they're on their way to being a solid team, but they still have the problem of not enough talent on the wings and too few minutes for all the talent they have to develop in the front-court.  They're also lacking a real star player.  Big Al is their best player at the moment, and there's no telling if either of the young bigs they have on the bench will ever even surpass him.

Also, Devin Harris is a solid player, but he's 28 and probably isn't the long term answer at PG.  He also seems to have regressed very significantly in the past couple of seasons, which is troubling given his age.

Still, they're certainly in a pretty good situation for a rebuilding team.  But I guess my point is that although they're doing pretty well right now, any success they have with this current roster is kind of irrelevant because they're going to have to make some big changes (no pun intended) before they have a true core in place.

imo they shouldn't think too much about wins this year (hope I'm wrong and they win big), but I doubt they can really do much of significance right now.  Instead, they should trade Devin Harris and one big for a decent player and a first rounder in the upcoming draft and whatever else they can get....time is on their side..and Burks may start to come alive at the 2.

Devin Harris and Paul Millsap (or Big Al) for Jeff Teague and Josh Smith.

I think that could be a good trade for both sides.

I'm always happy when the Heat lose, but, on the other hand, I am obliged to root for Clippers losses to give us the best draft pick possible.

DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson
