You have to take into consideration where a franchise is in their cycle (so to speak). Are they presently a contending team on the upswing? Are they a mature, legitimate championship contender looking for the missing ingredients? Are they in full on rebuild mode, etc?
The deal as constituted had the Hornets receiving Odom, Rockets guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and forward Luis Scola, league sources said.
Lamar Odom is 32, has been in the league 12 years.
Luis Scola is 31, 32 by the playoffs
Kevin Martin will be 28 on Feb 1st.
To me, to be a legitimate championship contending team, you need full fledged stars, still in their primes (even if at the tail ends of them like ours were). Once you get rid of Paul, you no longer have a superstar around which to build a team, so to bring on admittedly good to very good players Odom and Scola, and a pretty good mid-aged player in Martin is not the right move for the Hornets at their stage as a franchise. Getting Odom and Scola and Martin, to me, makes them like the Celtics teams that Danny broke up. They're probably good enough to have NO make the playoffs, but considering their ages, they have no legitimate upside (outside of Martin). To me, NO should be going after younger players with upside and draft picks (and I don't think any first round draft picks was part of that package to NO), so on that basis, I think Stern can say with a straight face that this wasn't a good deal for the franchise as they are right now.
If they had stars on the team and got very good complimentary players Odom, Martin, and Scola, it'd be a tremendous trade for them. That's not the case though.
