Stern listened to enraged owners on Thursday who insisted this trade went against the entire reason the owners pushed for the lockout, that nothing had changed, and yet it was Stern who made the extraordinary decision to cancel the deal. Demps tried to talk him out of it, league officials said, but Stern was absolute in his desire to kill the trade.

Paul had listed the Lakers as one of his preferred destinations, and it became a more clear choice for him on Thursday after the New York Knicks moved to the brink of completing a four-year, $58 million contract for free-agent center Tyson Chandler. The Knicks lost the salary-cap space they would’ve needed to sign Paul this summer, and the Lakers had been pushing hard to close a deal for Paul with Houston and New Orleans.

As one rival executive with strong ties to the league office said, “Stern cared about two things: selling that franchise for the best possible price and showing the players that they weren’t going to dictate where teams could trade them. But now, there’s no way that the league can allow Chris Paul to be traded at all; otherwise, Stern is basically deciding where one of the top players in the league is going versus having any fair process.”

Sounds like it has exactly nothing to do with cap implications, or talent coming back, or preserving the value of the team so a new owner could dictate their own future upon purchase...

Its about Stern controlling the players. This train looks like its coming off the rails, kids.

if stern approves the deal without very significant changes made to it, it will make him and the whole league office look like even more of a joke, as if the veto was a heat-of-the-moment rash decision and now they are sheepishly saying okay.

Yep.  This has the potential to make the league look very bad.

I think no matter where CP3 is traded, if he's traded while the league owns him, it looks bad.

Martin+Scola+Dragic > Gasol > Rondo
Odom > Green

We can throw in some draft picks (ie Clippers)but how can we beat this?  Even the contracts/salaries for Martin, Scola, and Odom aren't horrible.  Why Houston would give up that much for Gasol is a question but that doesn't seem to be the problem.

The Celtics are down to signing Green and picking up a few bigs off the scrap heap.  If everyone is healthy, we can still contend but that is the ceiling.

If you are focused on rebuilding, and New Oreleans should, then both of your equations are wrong.  The Laker deal MIGHT enable New Orleans to compete better this year ... e.g. win 1/2 their games, but it makes them much worse when it comes to rebuilding ... and rebuild they will have to do, because those 4 guys are not a championship core.

I think the offer of Rondo, Green and 2 1st round picks is superior to what NOH took.  Two starters, including an all-star caliber point guard, in the mid 20s and a couple of 1st rounders are better than 3 starters who average 30 years old and a back up PG if you're looking to rebuild...which is what any other ownership would be looking at if they were being forced to trade Paul.

If you've got to move Paul, what's the point of doing it for players who will not make you any more competitive and whose trade value is only going to decline?

I think NOH took the deal only because it would prevent them from going into full blown rebuilding and lower the value of the franchise to the league.

Mike

Maybe we sent Baby to the Magic for the express purpose of sitting on Howard and preventing the inevitable Bynum for Howard swap in the event of Cp3 for Odom/Gasol.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

You have to take into consideration where a franchise is in their cycle (so to speak).  Are they presently a contending team on the upswing?  Are they a mature, legitimate championship contender looking for the missing ingredients? Are they in full on rebuild mode, etc?

The deal as constituted had the Hornets receiving Odom, Rockets guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and forward Luis Scola, league sources said.

Lamar Odom is 32, has been in the league 12 years.
Luis Scola is 31, 32 by the playoffs
Kevin Martin will be 28 on Feb 1st.

To me, to be a legitimate championship contending team, you need full fledged stars, still in their primes (even if at the tail ends of them like ours were).  Once you get rid of Paul, you no longer have a superstar around which to build a team, so to bring on admittedly good to very good players Odom and Scola, and a pretty good mid-aged player in Martin is not the right move for the Hornets at their stage as a franchise.  Getting Odom and Scola and Martin, to me, makes them like the Celtics teams that Danny broke up.  They're probably good enough to have NO make the playoffs, but considering their ages, they have no legitimate upside (outside of Martin).  To me, NO should be going after younger players with upside and draft picks (and I don't think any first round draft picks was part of that package to NO), so on that basis, I think Stern can say with a straight face that this wasn't a good deal for the franchise as they are right now.

If they had stars on the team and got very good complimentary players Odom, Martin, and Scola, it'd be a tremendous trade for them.  That's not the case though.
