I could see the players easily coming up with some sort of league and I could see many producers being interested in helping them out.

lol.  Underfunded and inevitably overhyped.  The players think they're underpaid now??  LOL

I'm sure they're going to fill stands....(Wherever they can secure an arena)  Playing playground basketball olympic style?

This would go down the tubes faster than the ABA, IFL, WFL...Etc.

The players have offered massive reductions in the current pay that goes to them, I don't think they as a group believe they are underpaid at all, or why else would they agree to a massive pay cut (as a group).
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Because the leagues numbers show that they are making too much money?  They weren't just willing to take a pay cut out of the goodness of their hearts.

The overpaid / underpaid debate is less relevent than the solvency of the majority of the teams.  It's also a straw man argument for the players as they're not going to make close to even half of what they're making now if they go anywhere else to play basketball.

So then let them capitalize on Amare's brilliance and start their own league.  Let them try to match Stern's brilliance for growing the business while keeping the league's image polished.

Stern has taken a product and grown it by leaps and bounds.  I  obviously don't agree with a lot of what he's done.  I obviously don't like him, either..But the product's popularity keeps growing.  The reality is that the owners assume the majority of the risk...For them to take less than a split in revenues is patently absurd.

Without the players...The owners have no product.  Without the owners, the players would have essentially....The NBDL. An underfunded, sporatically attended game.   But at least a person sees quality basketball when they attend an NBDL game.

Go for it, Amare.  Hopefully you didn't get too big of a mortgage.

who said it was out of the goodness of their hearts.  The point remains if you believe you are underpaid, you don't agree to give back hundreds of millions of dollars.

But who said the players believe they are underpaid? edit: OK, I see Finkle said it.  But I don't think that is the point he was trying to make.

The point is, if they start their own league, they won't get even a fraction of what they are making right now, or under the new deals the owners are offering.  So, the players would be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

I know the point he was making, I only commented on one part of it, which I found to be not borne out in reality.

So, do you disagree with the rest of it?  Do you think the players could start their own league, and earn anything close to what they are making in the NBA?

Hypothetically speaking, if the players started their own league, they would, I am sure, become part owners as well as being players.

So short term they would make less money, maybe a lot less. But if this new league became successful, long term they this group of players would benefit much more than the money they lose out on now and they could structure a system that would address the needs and future of all incoming players.

Yeah, I know that's a utopian way of looking at things but it is also a capitalistic way of looking at things. Lose the money now by investing in the new league and if successful, reap the rewards later.

Personally, I don't think they could pull it off but I don't think they should throw the idea away either. It could work if they get proper guidance and some crafty businessmen involved initially.

Right, and 5-10 years down the line, as this group of players become just owners, you have a new group of players who won't have that cut of the pie.

Right, and 5-10 years down the line, as this group of players become just owners, you have a new group of players who won't have that cut of the pie.
But that old group that become owners would probably give the new group a 55-57% share of BRI. So mission achieved. The old players/team owners sacrifice now for their own good and also to keep the system they believe in for future players.
