Still think we won't miss any games.

Expect, if not an agreement-in-principle today, then no games canceled and an extension of talks the next few days to finalize the deal.

There's just not that much difference between the positions when you consider how much money will be lost if games are canceled.

This thing is going to get done.

This is my feeling although it might just be me being hopeful.

It really seems like the sides are fairly close and are just negotiating how to stitch the remaining gap together.  If they are that close I think they'll be willing to extend for a day or two to get it done.

A new league can't just be created overnight.  [...] A new league could be formed, but it would not be at the level of the NBA for several years.
Nobody said it would be easy, but this is the nightmare scenario for the owners, and you can bet a dollar against a stale french fry that they all know it.

I know they do care, but its hard to take a 'let us play' campaign seriously when you've been silent to the public for months now.
It's a strategy called "keeping your powder dry". They saved the mass public appeals for the last mile, nothing wrong with that.

But I think there is something wrong w/ it when the NBA & the owners have absolutely dismantled them in the PR war.

Says you. Never mind that the public doesn't get a vote.

Aint even that close. RT @ChrisMannixSI: If PR spin battle btwn NBA/Union were a game, it'd be NBA 176, Union 3. They're that much better

The public might not have a vote, but both parties are pretty invested on what we think. They're arguing over how to split our money.

Why? Is there some indication that the fans of basketball won't grudgingly accept whatever they are given? Goodwill doesn't last, and neither does the other thing.

You don't believe that if things aren't resolved and games are cancelled, that public sentiment won't drive people away from the product?

Oh no, if they cancel games or the whole season, the NBA is going to find out what it feels like to be the NHL. But this isn't about games, this is about the "PR war". Specifically, I feel that it matters somewhere between "nothing" and "a fart in a hurricane", because fans only care about the end result. I am not entirely clear how much you feel that it matters.

I don't know all this legal mumbo jumbo but a warm feeling came over me (an excitement) when I read some comments saying they are close! I don't pray for trivial things like sports but I wish w/ everything they hurry the hell up!!! I don't know what I'd do with no basketball for too long (maybe a season). Suicide hot-line maybe?? LOL JK
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

I really hope they finish this soon. I think both sides would be very stupid to lose money and fans over what is a small amount of cash in the grand scheme of things. I also hope that KG and Ray's last year on the C's is not washed away by this disagreement.

But part of the PR drives the negotiating and how much each is willing to concede

Stern could call for "postponement" of 1st two weeks of regular season - not a cancellation, if progress warrants more talks

And Alan Hahn

Arena/TV conflicts make rescheduling an entire 82 game season for 30 teams a logistical nightmare. Better to work off current sked.

But part of the PR drives the negotiating.
How? The CBA is what's being negotiated, and the fans have no input on it whatsoever, so why would either side care one way or the other? Money is what is at stake here, not good will. The owners still stand to lose a pile of money if games are cancelled, even if every basketball fan had a David Stern plushie on prominent display in their home.

Fans are not leverage, fans are victims.

Because if games are cancelled people are going to want to point fingers. And if games were to be cancelled the general public is going to be pointing directly at the players.
