I don't think its fair to be citing these PF & C combinations with a complete disregard for the rest of the team's cast.

It's overtly simplifying an argument to prove a point.
If you're talking about my post, I was just responding to the topic.  Obviously yours and IP's PFs left something to be desired, but so did Baron Davis, John Salmons, Brandon Jennings, etc.

It's not a complete disregard, it's hard to win with a good frontcourt and a bad backcourt, but it's impossible to win with a good backcourt and a bad frontcourt.  If your PF/C have the advantage, your opponent's perimeter players have more to overcome to tilt the odds in their favor.  Clearly the better bigs don't win 100% no matter the rest of the roster, but if both rosters are good, history has typically sided with the better size.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Quote
I had the Gortat and Dirk team as the best team in the league EASILY.

Seems like this is a statement that might've been made with the benefit of hind-sight.
No, I voted them first in whichever conference they were in.

The only thing that the Mavs winning changed in my hind-sight is how much Marion would've stepped up in the playoffs.  He's not as old as I thought.

That and how much I think Kobe and Gasol suck (which was a lot BEFORE they got swept).

It was more of a general statement. A few times people had just listed the PF and Center combination.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
The last 5 NBA champions all had PFs that were 7 footers.  Size is the biggest factor in the NBA, hands down.  Let me know the last time a team won with a tweener SF like Ilyasova or Jamison.

Lamar Odom.

Plus the Heat won it all with undersized Haslem playing almost all of their PF minutes. The rest of their PF mintues were taken up by a combination of Antoine Walker and James Posey.

So one smaller guy and two 3/4 tweeners.

Also the Spurs the year before played Horry at the 4 with Duncan at the 5 for more minutes than Duncan played with Nazr Mohammed.

i wonder of the "insert these rosters into NBA2k" push will finally get off the ground this year since simulated basketball might be all we have.

It did to a degree last year. I know someone did at least the last 4.

Let me dig, because I don't think this ended up being true. One year it was really off the grid, but I thought last years ended  up being fairly accurate.

That's why I don't say size, I just say quality.

Okay, those two things I can get behind. I was having a talk with a buddy of mine the other night, and basically he was saying "who can you trade from Miami to win a championship though? Who is an upgrade?"

And the easy answer was "LeBron for Howard=championship". Its a downgrade in overall talent, but a better team, that better utilizes Wade and Bosh.

Simmons also hit upon this in his ESPN Trade Machine column. It won't happen - and James would likely sabotage any deal - but it should. Can you imagine? Riley exiles Lebron to Gilbert's Magic with the howling applause of 80% of the NBA fan base. Miami's roster balance and pecking order issues are resolved. Howard gets to chase an NBA title for the next five plus seasons.

How unpalatable for Orlando to trade Dwight to an in-state rival, but in this one instance - for Lebron - the team couldn't afford not to.

No but are Howard/Jamison or Noah/Ilyasova on that level? Those two are the groupings that made last year's finals. By year's end Bynum was a defensive a rebounding monster and Scola is IMHO the best PF of those three.

Honestly, I think Rondo's grouping of Gortat/Dirk might have been the best.

Horford, Cousins, Gerald Wallace.

By last 5 I meant both Lakers teams, not 06.

Lamar Odom is a decent enough point, but let's be fair the Magic were using a SF at PF.  Also Odom is strong, a beast rebounder, and a good low post defender + scorer.  He can play SF because he has amazing handles and decent speed/jump shot, but he's more of a PF than your typical tweener (played zero SF this year).  And Bynum still started 18 out of the 23 games through the playoffs.  So I can't take that point too seriously.

Couldn't find it, but I remember the rankings being pretty accurate. I think my team was an 87*, which was slightly better than the other 4 teams.

*The ranking made sense at the time.
