There are point guards with much better jump shots than Rondo who are nevertheless inferior overall to Rondo.

Why would you trade Rondo for a guy who, in a perfect world, becomes a guy on a level with Rondo?

okay on the same level as rondo would be superb then becuase irving still would have something rondo may never have ...a jump shot ..i always felt if rondo had a jumpshot he;ll be the best pg in the league by far

Then Jose Calderon best fit for the Celtics according to your criteria. He is a career ~50/40/90. How about Kyle Lowry, Beno Udrih, Ty Lawson, Jameer Nelson, Mike Conley.... all shoot better than Rondo. Nevertheless Rajon Rondo is superior player than all of them. Because a great jump shot isn't the be all end all, Or else Matt Bonner would be king of the NBA.

The OP is out of his ming.  We need to rebuild so let's trade our only player we can rebuild...... I'm sure that would be really enticing to other All-Stars during 2012 free agency, hey come play on a team with most likely 0 All-Stars.....

Only way I trade Rondo is if we get Chris Paul back, because they are the same age and CP3 is more talented.  CP3 is also the only PG we don't give up anything with at the other end.

I'm talking about overall impact, not skillset.  I think Irving's ceiling is a Rondo-level player.

I'm not trading an All-Star PG for a player who might be just as good some day.

hmm seems like guys are severly under estimating how good this kid can be ...that fine with me do so at your own risk of him lighting us up while were rebuilding around rondo..

I just don't understand why you would rebuild this off-season when the free agent class is weak, the free agency season will be shortened most likely so can't get too much done assumingly, and we have KG and RA coming off the books next year when there is actually going to be some legit free agents (guessing this was by design, so TP for Danny Ainge).

Trading Rondo for Irving (who by the way, despite your comments suggesting I know little about him or undervalue him, have actually seen him play and know someone on the Duke staff so had been following him in high school) is basically wasting $31 million on KG and Ray this upcoming season.  I just don't understand rebuilding this off-season, starting with Rondo when we have so much $ tied up in All-Stars who are at the end of their careers and contracts........

PS- Irving's body fat has recently ballooned to 11% recently.... I'll stick with the sure thing over the next few years in Rondo

CLE would never do this trade.  There is a clear cut #1 pick in this year's draft who is a potential superstar.  There are no guarantees of course as we've sen plenty of can't miss guys miss. But Rondo has been in the league long enough, he's not going to get much better than what he is today.

Please tell me who the clear cut #1 pick is...... cause in all honesty, this is one of the few years where there doesn't seem to be consensus as to who the #1 pick is......

and I am fine with Rondo not getting any better.... clearly we can win a championship with him (this has already happened), and he is now a 2 time All Star.

Rondo not getting better?  For goodness sake, he's gotten better, dramatically better, every year!  Last year he was a serious mvp candidate for the early part of the season.  He was the best player on a team with four allstars.  Why do you think Wade decided to take him out in the Heat-Celtics playoff series?  Think about what that says about Rondo.  Come on people, this kid has unknown upside.  If I were Danny Ainge, I wouldn't trade Rondo for anyone.  Not Dwight Howard, not Lebron James, not Blake Griffin.   You just don't trade this kid.  He needs to shoot better.  He needs to be more aggressive more consistently, not just in terms of attacking the basket, but also in terms of pushing the pace, of having a gear in between sleepwalking and racing.  He's got a lot of room to grow, but he's already arguably the best pure pg in the league, and if he gets any better, not only will the best pg question be settled for a decade, but they'll have to invent a new vocabulary for this guy.  Let's just say that being "rondo'd"  will enter the English Language outside Boston.  People from iowa to liverpool will talk about being beaten out on a business deal, or losing out in a romantic adventure, or getting embarrassed in a game of chess, etc., as "being rondo'd"!!  Lol!

well im pretty much convinced that its time to rebuild i can go on & on why i feel that way but i'll go to the point

rondo for cavs 1st pick (irving)
or
rondo & jeff & 25th pick for cavs 1st pick & anderson verejo

thoughts?

Why would we rebuild by trading our best young talent for what would at best turn into a lateral move?

well me persoanlly i like what i saw from irving in college he has a good ceiling enough for me to make the move & begin the process of rebuilding but das just me
You liked what you saw of Irving in college?

What, all ten games of him? Are you kidding me?

Rondo has shown championship tenacity and talent over 5 years, holds many Celtics passing records, has been the MVP of this team in two different post seasons averaging nearly a triple double in one post season run against playoff competition(14games, 2 more than Irving's entire college career) and is only 25 and you want to trade him for Irving?

If you said KG for Williams and Varejao I could almost wrap my mind around that. Ray Allen for a player and a top 3 pick i could almost understand.

Rondo for the rights to Irving? I just don't get.
TP for beating to this.  I thought the same thing --> trading away our all-star PG for someone with 10 games of college ball under their belt.

I wouldn't move Rondo for anyone in this draft class even with Varejao thrown into the deal.  And the OP wants to add Green into the deal?  ::)

The reason you trade Rajon Rondo - and I am not advocating this, just explaining this - is because he is the same age as Lebron James.

If:
1. Rondo's peak years coincide with Lebron's peak years
2. Management does not believe we can beat Lebron
3. The ONLY goal is championships
4. Management believes Irving will be as good as Rondo

Under that set of assumptions, it makes sense to trade present value (Rondo) for future value (Irving).
"All I have to know is, he's my coach, and I follow his lead. He didn't have to say anything in here this week. We all knew what we had to do. He's a big part of our family, and we're like his extended family. And we did what good families do when one of their own is affected." - Teddy Bruschi

why trade rondo thats not rebuidling. I agree with KCattheStripe.let offer K G Ray Davis and J O and see what we can get in the form of first round picks and players in the next two or three years. we should keep whatever pcks we already have. so we can select our kind od players. rather than take throw aways from other teams.

I think the whole idea that we should rebuild is wrong. Why don't people remember that we were just a few minutes of bad offensive basketball and a couple of miracle LeBron shots from going up 3-2 against the Heat? Miami did not destroy us. Our offensive ineptitude did.
