Why I took Lanier:

1. Sam Jones was gone.
2. I wanted another quality center for this format. So I get a guy who in 73/74 the year I'll use who put up 22+ppg, 13+rpg and 3bpg. As a backup center.

This is the big reason why I'm warming up to your pick of Lanier.  Some great frontcourt depth now.

I know I have heard some consern about my pick of Rodman, and yes he was a reach, but

- He's not a starter and I wanted a specialist on my bench that could rebound, play unbelievable defense and be versatile enough to guard multiple positions. Rodman might be the best player in NBA history to fill that role.

- I have the fifth pick on Tuesday in round 6 and there are 4-5 small forwards that will be perfect as my starter. I was confident looking at the teams picking between my picks that at least 2 of those guys would be available but figured once someone filled out their starters they may look upon Rodman as a perfect bench player so I chose him now and will wait on the SF.

- I wanted a defensive player to offset prime Lebron, prime Larry, prime Kobe, in late game situations and yet still be able to handle prime Malone, prime McHale and other PFs.

Hope that helps to explain my reach with Rodman.
If we're talking about only one year, I'd take Ben Wallace as the superior specialist.

7ppg, 15.4rpg, 1.6apg, 1.7spg, 3.2bpg

Dennis Rodman isn't gonna be able to guard LeBron and Kobe.  Not nearly as well as the multitude of elite perimeter defenders still on the board.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I'd take Dennis Rodman over Ben Wallace ten times out of ten.

Can I do it 11 times out of 10?

"On the subject of doing the right thing and it being the right thing to do: Can you imagine — before you signed this contract — a scenario where you might have taken a year off, would you, could you have coached the Los Angeles Lakers?"

"I don’t know that. Once you take a year off, you pretty much can coach anywhere. But that would have been strange."

"Ethically, would you have a problem with that, them being the Celtics’ archenemy?"

"I did have a problem with that if I had, let’s say, did it this year. I had a philosophical, a big problem with that. If I had said, ‘You know what, I’m going to let my contract expire at the end of this year,’ and then go take actually any other team. But especially them and a couple of other teams. I couldn’t do it. I told my agent that. That’s something I can’t do. I don’t function that way. And I just thought it would be a very difficult thing for me to do."

Why are you upsetting the balance of the universe?

If you're talking about at the FT line.

Defensively I've always seen them on the same level, but 100 levels above everyone else.  Too hard to compare them in different eras.  What makes you say Rodman is the automatic winner?

My initial thoughts on Round 5.

What I liked:  Chris Paul & Robert Parish.  (I like the fits a lot.)

What I didn't like:  Reggie Miller, Dennis Rodman, Ben Wallace, and Allen Iverson.  (All too specialized to go this early)

What I'm still thinking over:  Bob Cousy (is he the right fit there?),  Steve Nash (see Bob Cousy), Sam Jones (toughest one to call, IMO.  Heckuva player but is he a starter in this thing?  I don't know),  Bob Lanier (warming up to the idea the more I think about it from a fit standpoint), Dikembe Mutombo (too one-dimensional?)
I'd be kicking myself if this trade actually happened, but I think Nash for Cousy is a no-brainer.  Better fits on both teams.

Funny, Nash was my other consideration ... it was a toss-up, so I went with Cous cuz he did everything with style and grace, and I think he'd fit on a team with all super-star egos and still get everyone on the same page, and get them the rock where and when they needed it. The guy was a magician with assists, and had no big toes to step on. But Nash would be a great fit with my other players as well ... I really pondered quite a while on that one. ;)

Rodman was far more versatile a defender especially early on in Detroit.  He would guard a SG one possession and the next would be guarding a C.  His range defensively was incredible and frankly unmatched in NBA history.  He is also by far the best rebounder in NBA history (when pace and league average is accounted for).  Wallace is essentially a poor mans Dennis Rodman.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

But I'm not sure if Rodman could slow down Shaq or Wilt. At 6'7" and about 210, he was 2" shorter and 30 pounds lighter than Ben.

Ben works great for me vs the Shaqs and Wilts. If Ben stymied Shaq back in the early 2000's then I have faith that he could slow him down for this draft.

There is video of Rodman guarding Shaq.  He actually held his own quite well against him.
