With their final selection the Memphis Grizzlies are going pure offense
SF - Kiki Vandeweghe
1983-84 in just 35.1 minutes a game Kiki bombed it from everywhere for 29.4 ppg, with a FG% of 55.8, which includes 36.7% from 3, and a nice solid 85.2% from the line for a TS% of 61.8% and eFG% of 56.2%, which makes Kiki one of the most efficient scorers ever.
Compared to Detlef Schrempf, Kiki Vandeweghe is a VERY small forward
1 inch shorter but just flat out better. Much better scorer, much more efficient scorer, and both are terrible defensively. I will give you that Detlef is a better rebounder, but given Detlef isn't elite in that regard, I'd much rather have the significantly better offensive player.
Detlef is a much more efficient offensive player as well as the player with the better basketball IQ and is significantly better suited to coming off the bench, something that I think is being overlooked in this game.
The year I chose from Kiki
78 games, 71 starts (so clearly Kiki is capable of coming off the bench)
35.1 minutes
29.4 points
55.8% from the field (2 and 3)
36.7% from three
85.2% from the line
for a TS% of 61.8% and eFG% of 56.2%
PER 23.6
AST% 13.1
Kiki had 6 straight seasons of 21.5+ ppg where his lowest FG% was 52.3% (the TS% that season was 59.7% the other 5 were all well above 60%). In the 7th season he played 37 games (started just 7) and was at over 20 ppg and 50.8%. Had he not gotten injured there is no doubt in my mind he would have continued scoring at a very high and very efficient rate.
It is laughable to call Detlef as efficient as Kiki. He just isn't. He only had one season as efficient as the season I chose and he started every game (and thus clearly wasn't better suited to come off the bench).
