I can see Rondo being moved for a star player.

I just don't think there are many young stars out there to get.

is chris paul a star player , he seems attainable
If people think Rondo hasn't progressed in a satisfactory manner this season, why would they want Paul? He has actually _regressed_ steadily over the last 2 seasons.

Great handles, distribution and can nail an open jumper.
That doesn't answer the actual question posed.
1)  A regressed Paul was still better then an improved Rondo

2)  Regressed Paul disappeared in the playoffs and we saw best pg in the NBA Paul.

CP3 "disappeared" in the playoffs against Denver two years ago.

And last year the Lakers neutralized Rondo.

Mainly by having Artest knee Ray in the thigh. If Ray was hitting his shots then it's a different series.

Good players have bad series.

Chris Paul is the best point guard in the league. He would be an upgrade over Rondo for at least the time the big 3 is around.

The problem is that CP3 probably would not sign an extension with us, which would make the Celtics hesitant to do the deal.

Why wouldn't he?  He's has his share of injury problems, I could see him being pretty happy to get everything guaranteed before the end of next season.

One thing I know is that I wouldn't be shocked to hear anyone on his team being traded or shopped. This year has shown that almost no one in the NBA is untouchable. We saw Deron Williams, one of the best PG in the NBA be shipped out for Devin Haris. Anything is possible.

Become Legendary.

I think the majority of us who would make that deal would do it only if there is a contract extension as a part of it.

Probably fair to say, but I'd still give up Rondo for Paul even without the guarantee he would be back because frankly, I think the team needs to go all in next year.  Also, I don't believe Rondo and an old Pierce are going to draw free agents in 2012 and with both of them on the team, I don't think we would be bad enough to really get the high level lottery pick in 2012-2013 that could net us a franchise player (without getting really lucky in the lottery), so I'd rather just start over (if Paul leaves, I think Pierce may just retire, leaving the team a lot of space and it will be awful leading to the high picks you need to really build a contending team).
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Trading Rondo as part of a deal for Paul, D Williams, D Rose; sign me up.  For Ellis or Conley, no thanks.

I think Chris Paul does for the Celtics what Rose is doing for the Bulls, Put us over the top.

In terms of value, right now Paul may be undervalued because of injuries.  I still completely believe that Paul has many years of elite play in him.

Rondo in my opinion has always been overvalued even though it is starting to catch up with him some.  Rondo for MVP?  Please, that was nothing but media hype.  Now people are starting to see the problem with Rondo and how easy it is to exploit so his perceived value may head down.

It all depends on what we get back of course but I think Rondo is one of the few trade assets we have and it needs to be considered.

I think I agree with this.  It's a gamble, but a calculated one.   The good that could come out of getting CP3 (another championship, a legitimate shot at Dwight Howard) is worth the risk of losing Rondo for nothing.

Rondo's the one of the best values in the league at $11.5 mil. per year over the next four years.  Paul is making $16.3 for the upcoming season followed by a year where he has a player option worth $17.8 Mil.  He'll probably turn that option down to negotiate for more wherever he ends up.

Rondo's going to need good players around him to build a contender, but so is Chris Paul.  We've seen recently that superstars don't win titles by themselves anymore in this league.

Rondo's playmaking skills are unparalleled.  I have no doubt that he's going to be a guy who makes those around him better for years to come.  Having the extra $6 to 8 million to spend to build around him that we wouldn't have if we traded him for Chris Paul is going to help us build another contender.

Trading Rondo would be folly.

I think Rondo is to good of a player and a draw for other players to trade him for someone that could easily become a rental.

The extra money is worth it in terms of Paul superior ability and superior draw (in terms of other stars)

Where's the risk of of losing Rondo for nothing?  Do you mean in 2015?

Yeah, I hear you, but at the end of the day what are Paul's options going to be?  There don't seem to be a lot of contending teams that will have cap space to sign him; the Knicks don't look like as much of an option any more.  If we've got CP3, are coming off a deep playoff run, and have a legit shot at Howard, I think Paul would come back.
