Key line in A Sherrod's story:
Dr. Brian McKeon, the C's team doctor, said the 39-year-old has a Triceps Surae injury which has created pain around his right calf and Achilles Tendon that has been too painful for him to play through.

I thought the calf and Achilles injuries weren't related?  One could conclude otherwise based on this.

Well...doesn't the calf muscle envelop the Achilles?

Not sure, but that doesn't matter. The point is, that it is the same "Triceps surea" injury, that is effecting both.  Therefore it's reasonable to say that a re aggravation of it could put him in the same situation he was in before (missing months of play).  It also shows that they were NOT telling the truth, saying that it was 2 separate injuries.

The calf muscle (gastrocnemius) connects to the achilles tendon. It basically pulls the achilles tendon when it contracts, and allows the foot to push off the ground in a lever system type of manner.

That's a stretch, although we are probably talking semantics.

Basically, I think it was dumbed down to us as a "calf" injury and Achilles injury, because most fans are not doctors.

Anyways, as soon as the team doctor got involved, I think we can be 100% confident they are not lying about his condition, since that would put him in a very difficult position where he could basically be sued and possibly put his practice in jeopardy.

What a backfire this whole center position fiasco has been.
We will do just fine with a combination of JO and Krstic.

Only if Krstic plays like he did in his first 5 games in green.  If he plays like he did the rest of the season we won't.
If you expect him to pull ~10 rebounds in ~10 minutes per game, that's not going to happen. If you expect him to play more than ~10 minutes per game on a regular basis, that's not going to happen.

In 10 minutes per game, he'll be just fine.

When did he pull 10 rebounds in 10 minutes for this team?

Just by watching him he clearly was trying a lot harder in those first games with us than he did later in the year.  His rebounding effort was lacking the more he played with this team and he was less active.

This is the playoffs I want the Krstic that was really trying when he first came here as opposed to when he started dropping off in effort as the year went on.

Question for the medical experts:

Given what we know about this injury, is it possible for Shaq to play, assuming the pain can be managed? Or is this something that actually physically prevents him from running or jumping?

I'm asking because I keep wondering whether the C's are just holding Shaq out as long as possible - at which point they'll shoot him full of heavy-duty painkillers and let him play. Is that possible?

This is from the team doctor:

Surgery won't fix his injury, and cortisone shots have little affect on that part of the body, McKeon said.

Shaq completely changes our rebounding just by his sheer size, the space he eats up and the weight he puts on the other teams' big guys who have to account for him.

This allows KG, Pierce and whoever else to sweep in for alot more boards.

Most of the great rebounders also make better rebounders of their team mates because of this.

It's not just how many boards Shaq gets - his physical presence affects the entire team rebounding.

It also dramatically affects our offense efficiency for the same reason that the other teams bigs have to stay close to him - because if they don't and he gets the ball, it's over - which opens up the rest of the offense.

Plus having to deal with his size wears down the other team's bigs....affects their rebounding energy, defensive energy, etc...it goes on and on

WE need 15 good minutes a night out of him - and we can put up #18, it makes that much of a difference. It was the same thing with Perk, it's that "physical presence" - rather than the "specific player".

http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/celtics/index.php/2011/04/20/shaq-out-friday-may-play-sunday
Quote
Though Shaquille O’Neal has been ruled out of Friday night’s first round playoff game against the Knicks, there is a possibility that the Celtics center could play in Game 4 on Sunday.

It all depends, per usual, on how he responds to a workout this morning. Doc Rivers said today that the team’s medical staff has noticed some improvement in Shaq’s response to a strained right calf muscle and Achilles tendon.

“He’s going to try to go tomorrow. I just don’t see it,” Rivers said of a scheduled Shaq workout for tomorrow before the team boards its early afternoon charter flight. “I’m just going to be a real doctor right now and say I doubt it. But he is going to try to do some things tomorrow and we’ll see.

“He’s had some improvement but I don’t know how much,” said Rivers. “I just go by what Eddie (trainer Lacerte) and (Dr. Brian) McKeon tell me. They said he’s had some improvement so I’ll relay that onto you guys. I’m not sure yet if he makes the trip. It depends on what’s best. If you see him on a trip that means he’s really close. That means we think he’ll play Sunday.”

So, can we say that the Eagle news was BS already? Thanks. Once again, they brought no new information. Just based the story on one man's conclusions on information that we were already aware of.

I think this is going to have to be a wait and see.  Could Danny be lying?  Sure.  However, some people are acting like every injury report Danny ever gave has been a lie.  The same people on this board who are saying Shaq is done now were the same ones guaranteeing that JO was done for the season a month ago because Danny was "lying" about JO coming back.

Am I guaranteeing anything?  Absolutely not.  However, let's just see what happens before any accusations go flying.

As I ponder the possibilities of a Shaq-Less playoffs and Finals, I rest assured in One Thing in relation to how critical a certain 2nd Place Finisher in Defensive Player of The Year Voting is to our team:

At Least We have Kevin Garnett Back - and he looks very good - to me.And he is STILL doing KG-Like stuff (Ask Jared Jefferies).

The possibility of Shaq being out doesn't concern me as much as 08-09 playoffs did - when we were wondering about KG.

We are STILL in the Championship Business, folks - because we have KG. And you add in those Three All-Stars, and Rondo playing like the Rondo we know?

Yes we are still in the hunt. :)

To me, when those Four play up to their potential, we are tough to beat.

For what it's worth, I've never heard of the Eagle Tribune
