if Ainge doesn't regret the trade after tonite's re-injury to Shaq, along with the blatant decline in the team's play, then he is even dumber and more arrogant than even i thought .......... then again, you can probably count on this week's WEEI radio appearance to be full of his usual smoke blowing double-talk.

Again, how is the Perkins trade responsible for the decline in the team's play? Which games would Perkins have changed the outcome of?

Perkins wasn't going to rejuvenate Pierce and Allen and heal the injuries to Rondo, West and BBD.

Clearly this was one of the Celtics' most well-kept secrets.  :D

Could some of it be a concern about the center rotation going into the playoffs?  As much as I'd like to, I just can't find many positives in Shaq's recovery from injury.

Is a center rotation with Perkins that much better than a center rotation with Kristic when we consider our likely match ups that it would be worth going into the playoffs with Pavlovic as our wing back up?

I think this is a bit of a straw man, because if we hadn't traded for Green, we would have gotten a better wing than Pavlovic.  There are reports that we could have had Anthony Parker, and I think he would have made a fine backup.

And yes, I think the difference between Perk and Krstic is significant.  That being the case, with Shaq's injury issues I'm very worried about our ability to adequately control the paint in the playoffs.

Just out of curiosity, if Perk has another injury does the balance shift the other way?

Yes. That is exactly what happened at the start of the trade

According to another big man who made his first start since early November on Sunday night, Shaquille O'Neal will be fine and might even play Tuesday against the 76ers at TD Garden. O'Neal strained his right calf and limped badly off the court with 11:11 remaining in the second quarter.

“He told me he's OK." said Jermaine O'Neal, who missed more than half the season himself after having his left knee scoped. "He seemed to be in good spirits when he left, and I think he may be out there on Tuesday, but we’ll see. He was laughing and joking, I think it was more of a scare for the guys on the team and the fans of the Celtics.

So he may even be able to play Tuesday. Sure, Shaq may have gotten lucky, but like I said, it was highly unlikely a calf strain was gonna sideline him for the playoffs, if not the rest of the regular season. Should Danny still regret the trade right now based off Shaq before the playoffs start AND the idea that he'll more likely be in it?

the center rotation with Perk vs. Nenad honestly isn't even close...especially considering the overall impact the center position has in our system.

if you don't have a defensive center our system, the whole balance is thrown off.

The PPG given up may not be too bad, but the impact of not having a defensive center also affects the offense. we get a lot of easy buckets when our defense is controlling the game...plus, we have that swagger which makes other teams uncomfortable.

like has been said, the team functions better when there is a defensive center available. Which games would have been won or lost since the trade is really beside the point. The main thing is that the team was built to have a Perk-type player in the middle and without one it does not function properly.

Danny rolled the dice on Shaq (because he fits that mold) but I think what Roy is getting at with this thread is that now that we all see just how fragile Shaq is firsthand does that challenge the thinking about the logic used in making the trade in the first place (ie we can afford to lose Perk because we will have Shaq to take his place).

So the whole defensive balance is thrown off, even though our PPG allowed is better than before the trade?

And considering the offensive struggles have all been in the 4th quarter, which is the period Perkins plays the least amount of minutes, how would he have solved that?

Again, there is not a shred of evidence that Perkins would have prevented this slump (which started while he was here).

If Shaq can really play Tuesday, I don't know if he's that fragile.

I assume we can't compare JO to Perkins, but he's a much better fit to the system than Krstic, and has shown that since returning. I think it is worth nothing that even with Krstic out there, we didn't give up a lotta points in most games. Remember that long running stat I had about how many games they allowed less than 90 points? Maybe people will then turn to advanced stats, which may indeed adjust for pace and stuff, but that surprised me. We just need good fundamental defense on top of the beef that Shaq and JO provide.

Why does Ainge have to regret it now when Shaq's not even out for the season, and may still be able to play before the playoffs start?

Seriously...All Shaqs game today proved, is that when he IS on the court, he's still a force.  If he played 12 minutes at the same level of productivity as the 5 he played, and was taken out without incident, Ainge would look great right now.

He caught a tough break. If he got the same "injury" in the playoffs, I bet he'd go back in.  Granted I'm not 39 or 300 lbs., but I've strained my calf tons of times and played again that day.
That's a big "if."

And it didn't happen.

Ainge will wake up tomorrow morning still self assured and convinced this trade was a steal.

I second that emotion.

If anything, Ainge probably regrets that he wasn't able to trade Perk last summer.  (I kinda regret that, too.)

It is great news if he is able to return soon, but I still remember what the Celtics said back in early February when he suffered another minor injury. Hopefully he can play a game or two before the playoffs start.

No.

This team lost a championship WITH Kendrick Perkins. He wasn't there in game 7 but was out there during other losses. The 2010 Celtics lost Game 7 because they wen't through an offensive drought, the same type of drought that's screwed them at times this year. Walking the ball up and being forced to take desperation, isolation shots.

Absolute not. Green still has promise and Krystic is a good all around center. I don't miss the frown at all. Saw enough of that with the Chief but at least he could walk the walk.
