I don't think Dwight is coming here in 2012...but we could make a run for someone like Marc Gasol.

That's true...but the difference between the two guys is kind of like the difference between Luol Deng and LeBron James..in terms of talent.

LeBron took his talents to South Beach...meanwhile Deng's team is at the top in ECF. ;)

Yeah but Deng is the third best player on his team.

Gasol would be a very solid piece to build around...but he shouldn't be more than the third or hopefully 4th or 5th best player on the court.

EDIT: Actually, Deng is 4th best, behind Rose, Boozer and Noah.

No, I agree with you had said...I just meant that Dwight (who will be wooed like LeBron in 2012) will take his talents to another city that has good beaches, glamour etc....meanwhile we will do just fine with someone like Gasol.

The thing that really worries me though is the idea of rebuilding around Rondo, maybe Jeff Green, and a guy like Gasol. That makes Rondo or Gasol our best player..and then 'other'.

This is a topic for another thread I'm sure..just saying, without a huge splash in 2012, I imagine I'll see 30 (and I'm 27) before the C's are in the hunt again.

Yes. Full MLE or overpay in 2012 if you need to. Getting Oden without giving up anything would be huge. He'll be a top center in this league for the next 10 years.

Is this a league where they've developed leg transplants?

You think he's cooked at 23?

Cooked as a top ten center? Absolutely! Cooked as a legitimate NBA player? More than likely. Dude is never going to be healthy.

For good reason that's probably the majority position, but I think he'll get healthy. Perhaps I have too much faith in modern medicine? Anyway, if he gets healthy and plays 35 minutes a night he's a top 10 center and an all star. For that reason I would be for Ainge making a strong push to land him.

A big man talent like this is worth the gamble in my eyes.

I'm in this camp..but I'm also still waiting for Al Jeefe to turn into a premiere power forward..soo..

I am in this camp as well...but I am not willing to set the team back about 4-5 years in the case that he doesn't get healthy...or doesn't get healthy yet (Grant Hill didn't finally get healthy until he was well into his 30s).

If we were talking a 1 or 2 year deal with a team option or something at bigger money, or something in the 3-4 million per year range, then it would be intriguing.  But I expect him to get (at least) the full MLE over 3+ years (in the case that Portland doesn't just keep him), and that is too big a risk given the situation the Cs are in.

MLE players don't make enough to set the team back that amount of time. So I think the full 5 year MLE would be the way to go. It signs him up until he's 28, and if it pans out we have a STEAL value wise. Image Rondo and Oden as two max guys for the price of one for a 3 to 4 year window? Oden healthy, Rondo and Green is ideal for the post Pierce era.

They don't when you are a contender.  But the C's will be one year away from rebuilding/reloading.  Any dead money on the cap (which he would be if he isn't healhty) would be detrimental to the process, and could prevent them from being in the running for a premier player.

If it pans out we're a contender for years to come, though. The risk is worth the reward. Plus, dead weight $6 million players don't hold back their teams like you're describing. I mean, do you have an example? I honestly can't think of one.

We're not going to get Oden unless we take a risk like this. Ainge is savvy enough to do it too.

The "at the right price" qualifier is too much of a cop out.  Anyone at the right price is a good signing.  The price is going to be something in the range of his QO I suspect ($8M'ish).  Even at $5M-$6M is too much in my opinion.  If he is bought out mid-season (next season) and available for real cheap, then OK, maybe.  It just doesn't make sense for the Celtics to take on such a high risk project right now.  We need reliable options to wrap around the core team.
Did you look at the survey options? If you look at them, you will see why that option is necessary. 'Do whatever it takes'? Maybe if it is Lebron, Howard, or someone of their caliber. The multiple choice survey is lacking in choices.

Danny needs to decide how much he values Oden and make his decision based on that. If he can get him at the price he thinks Oden is worth, then do it. If he is priced out of the market (or if there are better options out there), don't bother.

I'd rather the Celtics sign Artis Gilmore than Oden. Artis is younger than Oden.
