  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
The "at the right price" qualifier is too much of a cop out.  Anyone at the right price is a good signing.  The price is going to be something in the range of his QO I suspect ($8M'ish).  Even at $5M-$6M is too much in my opinion.  If he is bought out mid-season (next season) and available for real cheap, then OK, maybe.  It just doesn't make sense for the Celtics to take on such a high risk project right now.  We need reliable options to wrap around the core team.

I came in here to tell you that I thought the qualifying offer was 6 million, but my "cover your butt" instincts turned on and good thing, cuz you're right.

Quote
Now, as it relates to Greg Oden, he is eligible to receive a qualifying offer before June 30, 2011 as he was drafted in the 1st round and is completing the 4th year of a rookie scale contract.  The amount of his qualifying offer is set by the CBA at 30% 130% of his 2010-11 salary, or $8,788,681.  If the Blazers choose not to make this qualifying offer before June 30th, then Oden will become an unrestricted free agent.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I assumed any deal Oden would get would be south of 5 mill and any team willing to take a waiver on him may get lucky. Reading these responses, it sounds like people think he may get Perk money, which would be crazy for a team to do - especially because of his injury issues. He has been good when healthy, but not Dwight Howard good. I guess I just think people will be surprised at how little he actually signs for.

As for the poster that is advocating for Michael Redd - I think he is definitely worth a look and I LOVE his game, but he is 31 - Ray may last in this league longer than he does. He certainly would be an excellent player to have, but he will probably go somewhere he can get playing time (which isn't Milwaukee either).

I hope Danny has learned his lesson about injury prone players.

No thanks.

I'd only look into Oden at the right cost, but all reports out of Portland are that they can and will extend him for at least one more season.

They will give him every chance to heal and contribute. Too much invested to let him go.

Id look at him on the cheap but I wouldnt offer him anywhere near the MLE. Some team will definitely overpay for him. I think he'll resign with the Blazers, they cant let him go without him playing at least one full healthy season.

Yes. Full MLE or overpay in 2012 if you need to. Getting Oden without giving up anything would be huge. He'll be a top center in this league for the next 10 years.

Seeing as he's made of glass, you can look through Greg Oden.

The Celtics should throw him an offer sheet for the MLE. Oden is a rare talent regardless whether he's injury prone or not. He's an athletic 7'0" who is a beast on the defensive end. You have to overpay for someone of that caliber because he's a high reward type of player. This probably is all moot because I believe Portland will end up retaining him.

Is this a league where they've developed leg transplants?

IF JO retires after this season and we don't have to pay him/we waive him and IF we resign Jeff Green and Glen Davis..then I'm on board with offering Greg Oden a full MLE contract for 3 years.

THis also means giving up on Dwight Howard though, so while I think he's a pipe dream, others might thing differently.

  • Another undersized Celtic...
I'd give him a shot, but I wouldn't make him a target. I'd rather take him on in a trade scenario, not offer him any of our FA money--that is far too precious in rebuilding/keeping what we can of this team together. I would say FA money is for more of a sure thing. If we could land him for an expiring contract or something, it would be a great way to take him for a test drive, not that we'd have anything Portland would want.
