Now that Troy has committed to us, and Perkins quickly signed an extension that would have been way to much to afford, Danny has been completely vindicated for making the trade. It took guts to do what he did. Kudos to Ainge for making this happen.

And if the Celtics lose in the finals bc the Lakers, Mavs, OKC or Spurs out rebound us?  or Gasol kills the Celts again on the boards in the finals?

Will he still be vindicated?

See, this kind of argument can go both ways bc is PURE SPECULATION.

Ill wait until a month has gone by, see where the Celts are in the playoffs before saying Ainge made the correct move.

In truth, Ainge is pretty much screwed UNLESS the Celts win, bc most Celtic fans thought that was the end game before the Perkins move.  Regardless if the trade is better financially or personal wise, if the Celts dont get to the finals, Ainge will feel the brunt of peoples angst.

I am from the school who does not feel we would have won game 7 of the Laker series with Perkins. We were atrocious on offense, not defense. While we were out-rebounded, when did Perkins become this great rebounder.  We lost game 7 because we did not have a healthy KG. If we had KG playing then the way he plays now, I am confident we would have won 18 last year. So, what does this have to be with Danny smelling like a rose now? Well, I think Danny's opinion of Perk was lower than the marketplace, and he used exploited that discrepancy to his advantage.

When you lose a game by 4 points then any number of things happening differently could have caused you to lose. I don't think it's impossible to believe that we'd have been a basket or two better with our starting center as opposed to Sheed with a bad back.

Perk's scowl is a better defender than Murphy.

If he was a good defender, too, he'd be considered the best (or at worst, second best) center in the NBA.  He doesn't have that reputation because his D royally stinks.

This is news to me, and I don't say that facetiously.  Your observation on his D being so bad is based upon stats, what you have observed, what you have read, all of the above?  I hope it is better than you are stating here. If not, this is not such a great pick up.

Semih>Olajuwon

I guess it's safe to say people to tend to overrate role players.

Semih>Olajuwon?  In 2010?  Its probably a pick 'em/

Danny will smell like a rose if Shaq/JO actually get healthy and can play. Danny will not smell like a rose if they can't. It's pretty simple. Murphy is a good guy to add, but he can add all the guys he wants. It won't matter if they do not end up with a defensive anchor in the middle.

Murphy is not a good defender, but I think he is the sort of player whose level of bad defense tends to be exaggerated, meaning that he is a goofy-looking, unathletic white guy.

We still need to see how this retooled Celtics team plays when it really counts.

They'll still be doubters to Danny's moves.  This team needs to win a title to appease many of them.
Even if we do I don't think that will change many people's minds.

If there are really people out there like that then they're not a fan of the team.. period. They might as well root for OKC.

I agree. It was a major crapshoot and he did ok. Although, if Murphy had chosen to sign with the Heat, Danny would be smelling like rotten eggs or my sons diaper because they would have been 1 big man short (considering both O'Neals don't make one these days).

I actually think there is a chance the C's might not have played as well with Perk.  Sheed had a great offensive game that night through the first 3 quarters.  He was effective in the post against L.A. and seemed really focused.  If Perk was in there maybe Sheed would have been a 3 point chucker and not had the same rhythm he had during that game.  They might have grabbed more boards with Perk but they also may have missed more shots.  It could be a similar outcome with Murphy.  The offense could improve more than the defense takes a hit.  We still have KG, Rondo, Ray and Paul playing solid D.

Key phrase above being "I actually think there is a chance". Your claim that Perk might not have helped might be right, or it might be wrong, but to say that Perk definitely wouldn't have helped would be pretty silly.

It's easy to assume Perk could have helped if he was there--but let's focus on who was playing. Ray Allen took a knee in the thigh and wasn't the same--we were up by 13 without Perk there and we blew it because the offensive well went dry. Sure, Gasol had some rebounds--but you can only get a rebound from a miss...

I am a fan of Perk BUT

I would rather two all round bigs and jeff green than Perk any day of the week.

Unless Perk got a rebound he was useless offensively, and to be honest he looked slow and fragile after his injury.

We were an extremely strong defensive outfit this year while Perk wasn't playing so why on earth is everyone tearing up about the loss of defence.

Offensively if we have 5 threats on the court that spread the floor that is where the improvement was needed. See the scoring per game and the points allowed per game stats and make a case against that.

Oklahoma just payed 30 million plus for a 280lb dude whos standing on a bum leg.

Heat was never in a run for Murphy.
Ainge and Murphy both knows he was coming to Boston.
Ainge: "Troy, we would trade Perk if you come to us"
Troy: "Please Mr.Ainge, yes, yes"
Ainge: "But it would be suspicius if you came right away...tampering and stuff"
Troy: "Mr.Ainge, what should i do?"
Ainge: "Pretend for couple of days that you'r torn between us and a Heat"
Troy: "OK, Mr. Ainge"
