If Sox manage to win tomorrow (with Beckett on the mound), and the Rays lose (Shields starting), the Sox will have clinched a better record than last year, and will ensure that they at least get a one game playoff against the Rays.

Sox loss / Rays win, though, and suddenly the last two games are much more exciting than we could possibly want.

And now more John Lackey drama...even after a big win he has to make a stink in the locker room, picking a fight with the media over a text message regarding his filing for divorce.

Seriously, is there a more unlikeable player around right now?

While I agree with him that it was a slimy thing to do by whoever texted him about it, he was an idiot to bring it up like that.  Maybe the story was coming out last night no matter what, but he just shined a huge spotlight on it for no good reason.

Exactly.  And you know that if he laid another egg last night, he would have immediately blamed the text message in his postgame interviews.  Because he's just pitched so well in all the other starts where he didn't get a personal text message.

Toucher and Rich speculated that someone from TMZ sent him the text since they were the ones who broke the story.  The reporters at his locker had no clue what he was talking about, so he's the one who is blowing this up by first bringing it up, and then making veiled threats to the reporters about it.

Although I certainly don't know the specifics, filing for divorce when your wife is battling breast cancer is a pretty scumbag move on the surface.

Its also very commmon, dealing with such an illness is incredibly stressful and stress like that often destroys marriages. Having a child with a disability, losing a child, etc....

Especially a marriage that is already heavily stressed like a professional athletes. I mean my default assumption is that like most MLB/NFL/NBA players he cheats with some frequency.

Yeah, I am not going to judge him on this.  Its not like his wife is in a vegetative state or something, and he is leaving her on her death bed, and has knocked up some other woman that he is leaving her for (at least as far as we know).

They have only been married for 3 years, and something like that can put extra stress on a relationship that should be still growing at that point...and that can make it break apart at the seams.  Particularly if his job does not allow him to be there for her in her time of need.

It sounds like just a difficult situation that he should be allowed to keep private.  But, as a professional athlete in todays world, that just doesn't happen.
