Plus, Tampa has one game with the Yanks and Anaheim has one game with Toronto.

If the Sox can somehow manage to go 3-3, the other teams have to go 6-1 to tie them.  Hopefully they can pull that off.

When St Louis won a couple years back didn't they back their way into the playoffs almost letting Milwaukee overtake them before getting hot in the playoffs and then winning the Series like 4-1?

I won't be expecting any miracles but I wouldn't discount this team's chances of doing something like that considering how hot they got after their 2-10 start.

On the other hand, their pitching this year other than Lester, Beckett, Aceves, Bard and Paps has been worse than atrocious so it also wouldn't surprise me to see them go 0-6 and not make the playoffs.

I don't believe so when you're playing the Yankees who have everything wrapped up and nothing to play for until the playoffs and then the Oriole's I think they can go 3-3, but who knows when they just lost 3 of 4 to the O's.

Back during December's major league free-agent frenzy, New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman admitted to Jack Curry of the YES Network that he faked having an interest in free agent Carl Crawford(notes), just so the Boston Red Sox would have to pay more money to sign him.

I'm sorry I don't buy this one bit.  I think Cashman is just saying this because the Sox beat him to the punch signing Crawford after the Yankees lost out on Lee.

This is looking ahead more than just a little bit, but after the Rays and Angles both lost today I suppose it's worth considering -- if the Sox make the playoffs, they are pretty much guaranteed to face the Tigers in the first round.

Now, after the way the Sox have played in September, I'd initially want to give the Tigers a roughly 90% chance of winning that series fairly easily.  However, the season series is lopsided 5-1 in Boston's favor (I'm guessing most of those 5 wins came in the middle of the season when the Sox were hot).

How do you feel about the Sox' chances if they can somehow manage to limp into the ALDS against the Tigers?

6 run second inning for Lester.

I have nothing left to say about this team this year.  Regardless of their chances of making it to the post-season, I think it's clear that it's time for them to go home.  Whether it's mental or physical, they don't have what it takes to win games, even when their "good" pitchers are starting.


This year has to be considered an outright disaster, even if they somehow get into the playoffs.  The Red Sox paid a ton of money in the off-season and ended up with basically the same thing they had last year.

I'm so glad the Red Sox broke the bank this off-season so that they could improve by (maybe) 1 or 2 wins this season.  They currently have 88 wins.  Last season they finished with 89.  My guess is they'll finish this year with 90.
