I don't question JO's heart, as I think he has played his best, and is genuinely hurt.  But what I don't get is why NOW?  Why not 2-3 weeks ago, when he started hurting?  My guess is that they went with the plan to build his strength, and he had too much pain, and they figured that plan wasn't going to work...

Yes, it will be hard to get him into the rotation, but at the same time, he won't be an integral back-up...ideally he tag-teams with Shaq to back-up Perk.  All we can hope for now is a speedy recover....

I've been about as big of a supporter/defender of JO as anyone, but I can't really expect anything at this point.

There's no good reason to think he will actually be ready by early April, when he missed every timetable thus far.

I hope he is back, but we need to prepare for him not being there.

Can we go into the playoffs relying on Shaq? Yes it is an easier playing schedule, but any little thing and we are either going small with Baby or inexperienced with Erden.

This may force our hand into moving someone like Von or Nate, even for a future second-rounder to make a roster spot for 'Sheed.

Tonight's game was tough, but this news is worse.

What was the point of delaying the surgery 3 weeks afar once again? The staff's decision making around JO's knees is mind-boggling.

What?!! Is JO a plant for the Heat? Is he secretly punishing us for last season's playoffs? Did our training staff take a long hard look at those knees before we offered him the MLE? Is he going to make it up to us by retiring and letting us have some money back?  :-\

At this point I refuse to get my hopes up. I'll believe JO will be back on court contributing in the playoffs when I see it.

The guy has absolutely no heart cartilage in his knee.

Fixed.

I am frustrated that he didn't get the surgery earlier, though.  We've had two extended periods of rest, which did absolutely no good.

So many parts of the Celtics organization are among the best in the NBA.

That is why it is strange to me that I have found myself questioning the decisions of the training staff a couple of times over the past 3-4 years.

People say 6-8 weeks. I think with Jo-it'll be 8 weeks and then  another 1-2 weeks to get into shape and then a string of two games where he might play 10 minutes a piece then he'll take a few games off because his knee hurts. Then he'll play one game where he gets three blocks and then two days later he's shutting down so he can get ready for next year's preseason.

**Spoiler Alert**
He doesn't play any preseason games because his knee hurts. Then opts for another surgery two weeks into next season (in which he played two games) so he can be ready for a possible playoff run**

I just read on espn that the surgeon, Ainge, and Rivers all wanted Jermaine to get the surgery done a long time ago.  It was Jermaine who wasn't onboard.

clearly he will not be a factor this year. Let's just hope that Shaq is healthy enough at year end to help us. Development of Semih becomes more critical. Maybe will see more minutes (did last night).

Optimist opinion - he'll be back late March/ early April, in time to be ready for a 10-15 MPG contribution in the playoffs (which is all they ever wanted him for anyway).

Pessimist opinion - he's a bust, done for  this year, never get back to form, won't be a contributor next year either.

Pragmatic opinion - He'll be healed from the surgery in 8 weeks with enough time to be in shape and in rotation for the playoffs if he is determined to do so.  His history this year tells us, and knee issues like his support the likelihood, that he'll experience pain at some point after the surgery (sooner or later). BUT, we have no way of knowing the extent to which the surgery will reduce the short-term likelihood of debilitating pain or restriction of movement. No one here could possibly know, or credibly speculate the outcome of the surgery. Likewise, no one here can credibly speculate JO's determination to return (though many here seem to think they know him well enough to know his heart and work ethic -- baloney -- no one here knows him).  There is as good a chance as not that he will be able to provide some decent minutes given the playoff schedule.

Pessimistic opinions seem to dominate here so far.

Regarding the MLE: the only importnace of the $$ spent relates to who would have been here instead and what contribution that person would have made.  This, we have absolutely no way of knowing.  BUT, I'll say with pretty good certainty that we wouldn't be much better than 37-12 with the #2 record in the NBA.

This guy is a clown. What a waste of money and roster space on a good team. To all his apologists I had to listen to for weeks what do you have to say about this guys heart now? He did exactly what I said he was doing. He delayed and procrastinated as long as possible. What a joke. Can't wait to hear the excuses fir this bum now. Keep um coming guys. Humor me.

That's because the surgery probably does not have much of a chance of helping. So they basically are doing this only as a last resort and don't have much hope of it helping. Fine with me. Erdin is just as good - different but good.

It's common to strengthen muscles prior to surgery nowadays especially if its laproscopic surgery.  Should have been done in fall though.  Knee injuries are one of the worst to get as they are so crucial to basketball.   I think we should make Perk his Personal Trainer it would help him and Perk would not allow him to slack.

This is the most important part of this story. It seems everyone but JO wanted him to have the surgery much earlier in the season. Obviously it is his choice, but this stupid decision means he will basically be useless this season. And Ainge made it clear that the surgery does not solve any of the long-term issues -- bone-on-bone, arthritis -- so my guess is he also will be useless next year. Cut him now and find a big body that can at least give you 10 minutes a game. Or, depend on Semih. Either way, it is foolish to think this guy is going to come back and contribute anything.
