Yeah but he got them there in two of the worst seasons the East has ever had in terms of competitiveness, and did so with barely .500 records. This season those Raptors wouldn't sniff the playoffs.
I think the team has a crap ton of potential, but this season to make the playoffs they'd need Wall to be consistent, they'd need Harden to score more, they'd need Jeff Green to score more and be more consistent, they'd need Chris Bosh to be a leader, and they'd need Greg Monroe to "get it" and anchor the defense down low.
I just don't see that as a possibility. I think though that a team can accept being mediocre in the short term if they're looking at possible titles in the long term.
Considering the craptacular 76ers, Pistons, and Bobcats are fighting for the last slot they'd be in it.
eh...maybe. I honestly have no idea how good/bad the sixers/bobcats/bucks/pacers actually are. In some cases injuries are skewing the rankings (Bucks), in some cases it seems like chemistry (Bobcats/Pacers) and in some cases I just don't know what is going on with the talent that looks like it is there (76ers)..but Bosh led teams missed out to the same craptastic teams for 2 years straight. I just don't think he'd manage it this season.
Or consider where the Knicks are built around Amare and Felton.
I think Amar'e is a lot more qualified to be a leading man than Bosh, but aside from that you've got a pretty good point. I'd love to say that Felton is a considerably more stable player than Wall at this point, but Felton started out the season like an All-Star, but has spent most of the last month and a half playing like..Raymond Felton.
Gallinari, Fields, Turiaf, they're all solid players, but they're all role players. Wilson Chandler is the only other guy the Knicks have that looks like he can be a difference maker, but he's inconsistent too.
I dunno, maybe your Wiz make the playoffs now that I ponder it a bit.
