Dallas selects the very underrated Jarrett Jack
Jarrett Jack is having a very poor season by his standards (37.1% from the field and 24.6% from three) but he is a very capable player. Lovely pickup.
Great replacement for Kirk Hinrich. Jack will do very well as your starting PG in Dallas.
Yeah, I think a big part of his issues is that he plays so much with the incredibly mediocre (to be nice) second unit in New Orleans, and he is not the type of player who can carry a unit. Much like Hinrich, he is an incredibly useful player when he is surrounded by other quality players. He can play good defense (particularly against bigger PG's), can hit the midrange shot, and the occasional 3, and is a very solid, if not spectacular passer.
Since my offense will be running mostly through Roy and Dirk anyways, I really like Jack as a roleplayer.
I am not wild about Jack's defense.
I don't think he has the quickness to be an above average defender at the point. Struggles against too many guys with quickness.
He does do well with bigger guards slower guards though and plays good team defense.
I thought he improved a great deal as a passer while with the Raptors. An above average passing PG nowadays. Shows much better vision and range in the types of passes he is able to make.
I agree that he struggles against quicker guys (something I need to address). I think he is a matchup defender. He is going to be very useful against guys like Deron Williams and Chauncey Billups, but I am going to need to get him out of there against guys like Rondo.
I also think having Chandler behind him, and playing in Dallas' zone system is going to really help to minimize his issues with quicker PG's. I mean, he still has quicker feet than the current incarnation of Jason Kidd.
Definitely, Tyson Chandler will be a major help.
I wouldn't be that worried about bringing in another PG to defend quicker guys. If you can get it, good, but I think your overall lineup will likely be best off with Jack out there at the PG alongside two wings and two bigs.
I mean, em ... I doubt you get a PG with enough quickness + defensive ability and overall quality to make up for benching Jack or switching Jack to SG and going small in some way.
The downgrade from Jack to the new PG will likely cost more than the improved defensive skill-set adds.

Jarrett Jack is close enough to average defensively + with Tyson Chandler back there to provide excellent protection ... I just wouldn't be too concerned about how Jack matches up against quicker PGs. You might lose a little in the individual matchup but your overall lineup will likely be better off for having Jack out there.
I think Jack adds too much to your team. Is too valuable a role player.
