So the Pats got the Saints second round pick this year?
Yep, now they have the following picks tomorrow alone.
33, 56, 60, 74 & 90.
And honestly, there's not a huge difference between the late first guys, and the guys you can get in the 2nd/early 3rd. I'm a fan of the trade personally.
see my post below, thats false.
Bill's track record shows he'll likely miss on 2/3 of the 2nd round picks.
So if he hits on 1/3 that means we get a contributor in the second round who will be afforable to sign.
Most teams I would assume have a similar or worse success rate in the second round meaning they might hit on a second rounder once every 3 or 4 years.
Bill hasnt been the best drafter in the NFL wont argue with you there. That being said the strategy to gather multiple 2nd and 3rd round picks every year is sound IMO especially if you dont ever have the opportunity to pick in the top 10.
Show me another team in the last 10 years who is consistently slotted so low in the 1st round who has done more with their drafts. The draft is set up to reward the teams who have bad records and yet somehow the Pats still manage to get a crop of young players from rounds 2-4 every year in camp competing for spots.
Would l love Bill's success rate to be 40-50%? Of course. The fact that he has more picks than anyone else every year means he doesnt have to.
If it were we might be looking at 8 or 9 SB titles.
Since 2001, the Patriots worst season was 9-7. Their success is not in spite of the NFL draft.
