I'm starting this because I can't believe we never discussed Ricky Williams in this forum.

Anyway remember that Ricky Williams for all of Ditka's picks thing?  I was thinking about it because I'm watching that NFL top 10 draft day trades thing.

check out what those picks were actually used for

http://www.drafthistory.com/articles/article23.html

LaVarr Arrington made 3 pro bowls

Desmond Clark made one as an alternate

Ricky Williams only made one.

Kind of a very weird trade

Couldn't agree more. Loving this thread since I'm a huge draft buff (NBA and NFL).

love the mock draft talk.  didn't we deal one of the thirds for branch, though?  anyway, if i were to put together a mock right now (first round only), with the oakland pick in the first round, i take the ot from bc, castonzo.  with the pats pick in the 1st round, i take the lb from uga, houston (assuming both are on the board).  the great thing is, as the teams are currently situated and if the pats win the superbowl, they will have the last pick in the first and the first in the second.

I pretty much agree with this as well. But I would make one change. I think the first pick that the pats make, presumably the best player available, should be a corner back, defensive end, or outside linebacker. I feel like they are one more impact player away on the defense from being great on that side of the ball. After that, I say they should stack up on the offensive line like you suggest.

I think I would go:

1. O line
2. D line/outside linebacker (they interchange DE/DT so much, I am lumping them together)
3. Running back
4. Wide Reciever

I am not sure how much of a need CB is any more.  They can always use depth there, but with Bodden coming back next season, and Arrington and Butler still around, I think they are in pretty decent shape going forward at that position.

I am definitely worried about their lines though.  With Mankins likely gone after this season, and Light moving closer and closer to retirement, they are going to really need to inject some talent up front.  I don't think they need to use the first round pick unless there is someone they love there, but they really need to hit on at least one linemen next year.

And on defense, they have done a great job piecing things together, but Warren's contract is up soon, and those guys really are the key to their defense.  If they can add another stud there, I think it will solve a lot of problems.  Particularly if they can get a guy who forces double teams inside, it could open things up for the OLBs to rush the QB.

I would argue that one of the reasons they were able to get so much pressure from guys like Vrabel in the past was because you had guys like Seymore and Warren blowing up the middle, often leaving Vrable with just a back to beat to get to the QB.

I guess I'd list the Pats needs as

1 a DL
2 An LT
3 An Olb (I'm not 100% sold on Rod N, Jermaine C, and Tully.)
4 3 more interior linemen
5 A rb to make Sammy Morris expendable
6 A 6ft plus wr
7 a defensive back to make Wheatly expendable
8 Now that I feel good about Dane Fletcher I don't feel a big need for an ILB. Maybe on the practice squad

I kinda loved the way Tyrod Taylor looked last night. Sorta like a mini-Vick.  Definitely a different type of player from Hoyer. Athletic enough to give you something different even if he's not a great QB.  Hopefully a very very good wildcat QB.

Tyrod Taylor is not an NFL QB.  Maybe he can be a slot reciever or something, but his arm is nowhere near accurate enough, and he has no pocket presence.

Andrew Luck on the other hand looks like the best QB prospect I have ever seen in college.  He has the size, fluid mobility in and out of the pocket (as well as awareness of where the pressure is coming from), lightning quick release, and pinpoint accuracy.  He hits every checkmark.  I can't think of any QB coming out of college with a more complete skillset.
