Another thing to consider:  the NFL awards compensatory picks to teams that lose free agents.  If Moss signed elsewhere, the Pats would have gotten a pick in the 2012 draft, most likely a 3rd rounder.

So, what has more value, a season of Moss + a 2012 3rd rounder (at the very end of the round), or Moss' saved salary + a 2011 3rd rounder (likely 20th - 30th in the round)?

I would have stuck with Moss.

I dont think this was about the picks.  I think Moss wanted out.

Probably, but Moss has to know that by throwing a public fit or sitting out games, he would have been costing himself earning potential.

Just by being on the field, Moss made the Pats significantly more dangerous.  Also, from what reports have said, Moss was engaged with his teammates, trying to get them fired up, as recently as Monday night.  It doesn't look like he was quitting to me.
From what I saw of Moss on Monday Night he looked engaged to me. He was cheering on team mates as they scored, and he kept running his routes right into the safety help. He didn't do a great job blocking on the runs, but he never does. When the WRs were catching to ball he put more effort into taking a guy out.

If so, Moss is an idiot. Favre is done. We have a better chance at the Super Bowl than the Vikings.

I really think this was the Manny Ramirez Syndrome.  I think Moss was just freaking out about not knowing where he was going to be next year.  Some guys have the mental toughness to deal with that situation. Beltre for instance.  But Moss just doesnt have it, it wasnt even about money i think it was just about knowin where he was going to be and feeling wanted

Yeah, dumb move if the Pats think they're good enough to win now. The draft pick isn't good enough for the hit they'll take on the field.

One thing this trade shows is how incompetent our Bears' front office is.  A 2nd rounder for Gaines Adams (RIP), when Randy Moss goes for a late 3rd?  Talk about your all-time overpayments.

hate the short term, though I'm impressed with the long term haul

Wow: Pats will have double picks in rounds 1, 2, 3, 4 of 2011 draft. Their picks plus Oakland's 1, Carolina's 2, Minnesota's 3, Denver's 4.

That wasn't an overpay in my mind, Orton is throwing for a ton of yards but he's a limited QB. Not to mention he's never consistently gotten it done. Even this year he's failed in the Red Zone too often for my taste. The trade might end up being a bad one for all involved.

imagine what we could have gotten from the Redskins if they had any draft picks left

Worse. Two firsts and a third, plus Orton, for Cutler and a fifth.

However, I think Cutler is quite a bit better than Orton, and he'll get it together.  Outside of last game, Cutler has looked good this year.  I can't fault him for the offensive line.

Yeah that was a bad one, but considering how Moss has gone for sub-par picks twice now I can't hold that against the Bears too much. Especially when Gaines died before he was able to suit up for more than a handful of bears games.

Charlie Whitehurst drew more for some reason as well.

Orton can't throw it deep accurately enough to be a big time QB in the NFL. He's more of a post injury Chad Pennington type, but I don't trust his decision making as much. Solid average QB, but that's all.

a 3rd rounder seems so incredibly low for the value that Moss brought to the table, that there just *has* to be more to the story.  I mean, like BB or not, the guy is not a complete idiot.  He wouldn't trade Moss for a 3rd rounder because he thought it was a good deal...  Really, the only sensible explanation is that there were chemistry issues.

that said, as a Pats fan, I dislike the trade very much.

Question, is there a single team in the league that turns down Moss for a third rounder?  Why send him to the Vikes who we see in week 8?

My guess is that any team trading for Moss needs to be assured he's happy, or pay him upfront.

That probably limited the number teams who'd make the trade.
