This is just dumb.  >:(

Vrabel all over again... at least we got something for Seymour. A third round pick for a 7 time pro bowler who has not dropped of significantly is trash!

I hope Brady's hair cut was included in the deal.

And fact of the matter is there isnt anybody in the league that can do what Randy Moss can do.  Especially not a 3rd round pick.

Wow.  I've got to say, I'm pretty surprised.  I would have thought the team's Super Bowl hopes were worth more than a mid- to late third rounder.  I understand Moss was becoming a distraction, but his production and presence made New England a more dangerous team.

I guess BB didn't think the team was a contender this year, so he looked toward the future.

If the rest of our team steps up, we might not need Moss...I know, that is a HUGE if, but I still think we're at least a subpar playoff team without Moss.

Yeah, but who cares about being a subpar playoff team, right?  It all comes down to whether you thought the Pats were good enough to win a Superbowl with Moss.  If so, this is a bad trade.  If not, I suppose the Pats are no worse off, really, and they have a 3rd rounder for next year.

I'm curious to see how Welker does with teams committing to stop him as the #1 option.  I'm just not convinced that Brandon Tate can take pressure off him consistently.

Two interesting nuggets from Mike Reiss

"Filling the void. With tight end Aaron Hernandez offering wide receiver-like versatility, the Patriots have had multiple tight end groupings on the field 64.5 percent of the time this season. That is a significant shift from 2007-2009 when the Patriots were more of a “pure” three-receiver attack. While Brandon Tate and Wes Welker now move to the top of the receiver depth chart, the shift to more multiple tight end sets also is a key consideration when analyzing the Moss trade.

Patriots draft board in 2011. The Patriots now have two selections in the first, second, third and fourth rounds of the 2011 draft. The additional first-rounder is from Oakland, the additional second-rounder from Carolina, the additional third-rounder from Minnesota and the additional fourth-rounder from Denver."

Basically Saying so far the pats have been in double tight end 2 receiver sets 64 percent of the time so far this year, so maybe the offense was starting to shift anyways?  Still i like a two receiver set of Welker and Moss alot more then Welker and Tate

Can't say I'm too pleased about this.  Guy was still a key part of the Pats offense and this will certainly hurt them this year. I hope this is the first domino to fall in something else that could keep this team a contender this season.

Can we stock pile a couple picks (send OAK's 1st rounder back to them) for Asomugha?  We don't have the roster spots to draft 57 players in next year's draft.  We keep trading down and stockpiling picks every year...at some point, we need to just get a proven player at a need position with some of those picks.

Another thing to consider:  the NFL awards compensatory picks to teams that lose free agents.  If Moss signed elsewhere, the Pats would have gotten a pick in the 2012 draft, most likely a 3rd rounder.

So, what has more value, a season of Moss + a 2012 3rd rounder (at the very end of the round), or Moss' saved salary + a 2011 3rd rounder (likely 20th - 30th in the round)?

I would have stuck with Moss.

Probably, but Moss has to know that by throwing a public fit or sitting out games, he would have been costing himself earning potential.

Just by being on the field, Moss made the Pats significantly more dangerous.  Also, from what reports have said, Moss was engaged with his teammates, trying to get them fired up, as recently as Monday night.  It doesn't look like he was quitting to me.

If so, Moss is an idiot. Favre is done. We have a better chance at the Super Bowl than the Vikings.

Yeah, dumb move if the Pats think they're good enough to win now. The draft pick isn't good enough for the hit they'll take on the field.

From what I've read, the Pats wouldn't have earned a compensatory pick if they sign more free agents than they lose next year, so maybe that was their thinking.  However, with 7 (and now 8) high draft picks, I wouldn't anticipate the Pats being super active in free agency.
