I might be alone here, but I gotta ask:
Does anyone else not see it for Utah? I just don't see them as an elite team.
No point of bringing up contention with Gasol, he's great.
Its preposterous to dismiss to Yao Ming's injuries. 0 gp's, 77 gp's, 55 gp's, 48 gp's, 57 gp's.
Wings are good, not great.
Not a big Calderon fan.
This is a very, very good team. But I don't think they're head and shoulders better than other Western Conference teams.
I think with Utah, what it all comes down to is how one feels about three players on their team, Omri Casspi, Yao Ming and Jose Calderon.
Casspi is a wild card. He started out last year great but as the season went on he trailed off badly. Many seem to be remembering the great press he was getting through Christmas as one of the best rookies last year but after that, he fell off the planet and being in the tiniest of markets and worst of teams nobody really heard about his struggles as the year went on. His end numbers looked good but he was just awful for the last 3 1/2 months of the season.
Yao, we all know missed all of last year. When first diagnosed doctors said his career was probably over. Okay so he has been recuperating for over a year and we are told he will be healthy come October. I am willing to believe that. Some won't. But the question has to be asked, even though he will be healthy, does that guarantee his game will be back to what it was. 18 months away from NBA basketball can do a lot to your skills.
Calderon. His numbers are undeniably good. He is a great free throw shooter, very good outside shooter and racks up assists like crazy. But saying his defense is bad is kind. Also, is he a great floor general? People seem to go to two ends of the spectrum with Calderon. They love him or thinks he's bad, or at least badly over-rated.
So, depending how you view these three players will really determine how you view Utah. I just think the talent everywhere else is solid and most agree with that. But these three players will be the determining factor with the Jazz. As I said in my review of this team much earlier, I think they go deep into the Western Conference playoffs. maybe win the Western Conference. But I see 3-4 teams in the East that I think are much better.
