Why Is Glen Davis still on this team?

Some of the opinions here are uninformed and it appears they haven't really been watching the games.
For starters, the title of this thread is ridiculous!!
Here is my opinion, take it or leave it: BBD is 24 yrs old, in his 2nd year(before then was a rookie) and improving every season. Because he is on a major championship team with the likes of the 'Big Three' and Rajon Rhondo, he doesn't get the looks he might get elsewhere and yet, there are times he does get those looks and he proves how good he really is. Some here complain how he only got 16 pts/game in the 09 season starting in place of KG when KG was out injured. That year was his first year as a non-rookie and he was, what?, 22 yrs. old and 'starting' in the playoffs, in place of KG, no less!!!. Well, I think his 16-plus points were pretty good in the circumstances. Since then, his amazing defensive talent, rebounding and working on and improving those areas where he needed more practice, such as his jump shooting and figuring out how to move better so he wouldn't get his shots blocked in the paint have been consistently more successful. This shows me he's not only willing and able to work and get better every year, but also, that given playing time as a starter, he will become one of the best NBA players around. He is unique. It is highly unusual for a guy his length to play the position he does and yet he moves so fast and his size is so daunting that he actually plays PF very well. He is still new and young and the refs don't give him much lee-way, such as not calling foul on the opposing team when his legal screen near the line in the paint is bashed illegally (and wow that must hurt).
And now here is my prediction: If KG doesn't retire after next year when his contract is up and Baby is still his second, I believe Baby will have to go to a different team to achieve his career goals. He needs to play the starter position. Many here like to call him a role player and well, that is what he is right now, but that's due to the circumstances I just pointed out. BBD is young, just starting out, has exceeded expectations of many and I believe he will continue to do so, when given the chance, and he will be given the chance. It would be unwise of him to waste his talent and career. I know that Tony Allen seems to feel the same way and he has finally left the Celtics. I hope that his talent will carry him to a starter position also.

Well, with the Sheed thing becoming official now - looks like we will have Shaq, J.O, KG, and Glen as our Bigs for most of the season.

Perk won't be servicable (if at all) until probably late March once he is allowed to work himself back into shape.

We need Glen now more than ever.

And with the roster spot that is just about guaranteed with Sheed officially retiring, maybe we can bring back Scal?

Vet min for Scal, and as a 5th big, he brings a ton of experience.

Everyone is drafted young these days so I don't buy the arguments that adjust as if comparing to someone who left as a senior. On the other hand, I agree that the title of the thread is ridiculous.

Why not bundle Baby and Sheed's contract for a wing that could step in and play major minutes if Pierce or Allen go down?

You may very well be right, and if that's the case, I hope it's due to BBD playing well, rather than the other bigs stinking.  BBD -- just like almost everyone else on the team -- came up short against the Lakers, and I'd really love to see increased consistency from him in terms of performance.

I can see BBD moving on after this season, so I see why there's speculation about trading him.  However, I think his role will be too important this year to move him.  Now that Rasheed has put any rumors about coming back to rest, it doesn't make a lot of sense to trade Baby.

I'm not purposely trying to be a contrarian to you, but if Davis is the first big off the bench and gets more minutes than any bench player, then I think this team will be worse off for it.  In fact, I will go so far as to say mark it down: this team will not win a championship if that is the case.  Obviously there are much bigger factors than Davis, but I firmly believe he should not be getting the most minutes off the bench.

I buy this.  Why?  B/c last regular season, which you are comparing it to, the Celtics were superior in every single major category when Davis was not on the court... except one.  When Davis was on the court the Celtics were 1.7% better in offensive rebounding.  I not only expect Davis to have a better year, but really hope he does.

I love how people are equating Glen Davis' play as sixth man, first big man off the bench and the bench player with the most minutes as being a precursor to bad things for the Celtics and a short playoff run.

I think that is absolutely hilarious. Why?

Because the Celtics played their best basketball of the entire 2009-10 season during the playoffs beating the league's best teams. And who was the team's sixth man, first player off the bench most of the time and played the most total minutes and most minutes per game off the bench during the playoffs?

You guessed it....Glen "Big Baby" Davis.

To paraphrase what someone said on RealGM....so a guy in BBD who can play the 4 and at times the 5 thanks to his size will be pushed this season by someone in Harangody who doesn't even have an established NBA position yet just because he might have more lift?

It's not that simple, and posts like that make me realize why people used to love Bill Walker and J.R Giddens, and subsequently headpalm.
