Just heard it on the flash on WEEI.  I know the Lakers want to take him away from us because of how he defended Kobe.

I don't think he would sign with the Lakers unless our offer was disrespectful. He wouldn't see that much time for them backing up Kobe, he can't shoot so he isn't a great fit for the triangle and he's been a Celtic all his career.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz

I still think this FA frenzy will mean a lot of guys get overpaid and TA could well be one of them.  With guys in his category, DA might be able to strike gold by buying low on someone the rest of the market is down on but has the potential to bounce back from a bad season....like say Marquis maybe....

Neither the Nets Heat are not signing TA right now or until they lock up their max FAs, and the Lakers just offered Mike Miller their full MLE. So... he'd likely be playing for the minimum or maybe LLE in LA (not sure if they used it last year). In those scenarios he stays a Celtic.

I've been very critical of Tony Allen in the past, but this year he really started to figure things out and became a valuable piece of the team.  As much as I'd like to see him on the Celtics, if he can turn that growth and performance into a nice deal that can set his family up for life, then he should jump on it.

I don't expect the same loyalty with players like TA than with those like Paul or Ray.  For Tony, the difference between career earnings of $20 and $30 million is huge (I just grabbed those numbers out of the air), whereas the difference between a career of $120 and $130 for Ray or Paul is much less.

(Although I'd take that $10 million difference if no one else wants it)

I just looked it up, and Tony's career earnings so far are about $10m, compared to $158 for Ray and $123 for Pierce.  But my idea remains the same.

I think that TA will end up getting a large contract to start somewhere, and we will not be able to compete dollars wise. Just a hunch, and I hope I'm wrong.

Not convinced any of those teams are serious about signing Tony Allen.

I believe those were the squads in the Hoopsworld report yesterday. Chicago was also mentioned.

It sounds to me that those teams are just doing their due diligence in case their first choice, second choice and third choice plans fall through. Hence, it's too early to make anything of this.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
Let him go...  do NOT OVERpay for him.

He won't be that hard to replace.

I hope TA re-signs with us.  I think we'll need him, especially his defense.  And remember, just because Ray was the most healthy Celtics this past season, doesn't mean he will be next season.  He is the oldest.

I think Tony is line for a contract similar to what he got last time 2.5 per for a few years.

Just for fun, name one bench player in the league that can guard Wade/LeBron/Kobe as well as Tony did.

Agreed - same ball park as last contract

Yeah, especially when you look at what Dahntay Jones, a similar type of player received. He signed for 10.6M over 4 yrs from the Pacers. He was 29 when he signed the deal and had a strong postseason showing, especially as a good perimeter defender, with Denver. TA is currently 29 and had a similar impact in these playoffs.

True, but Dahntay Jones can hit a spot-up 3.  That's an important difference in this league.  Any player that can shoot makes it easier on his teammates by opening up the floor.  TA makes it harder on his teammates offensively.  That's a part-just a part-of why the C's can hold an opponent to 83 points and lose.

Danny is understandably looking at players with some offensive ability, especially shooting.
