  • You know my methods, Watson.
Let him go...  do NOT OVERpay for him.

He won't be that hard to replace.

Just for fun, name one bench player in the league that can guard Wade/LeBron/Kobe as well as Tony did.

I honestly don't know...  But I think Tony is a disaster waiting to happen.  He's injury prone, lacks a consistent jumpshot, has a terrible basketball IQ, still bites on pump-fakes, and has peaked at his potential.

I don't want this team to go into salary hell because they're overpaying for role players, when those can be plugged by guys who are still looking for jobs in September (simply due to supply and demand).

Best adjustment to his game as he (rarely/no longer) does this.

Tough to let him go though if we can sign him using Bird rights. Easier to let him go if we need to go into MLE.

I'd say keep him at a price.  If he would work on his outside shot it would be a lot easier.  He and rondo in the same backcourt doesn't work on the 1/2 court sets, rondo is the better jump shooter.  So much of tony's faults are mental and I think if he hasn't figured them out in year 6 (or7?) then we can't put too much faith in him.  He did a great job in playoffs can't take that away from him.  At a price I'd like to make him a career bench celtic.  At what point can he become a starter for another team?  that to me will be the big thing, if he can get more minutes/start he'll probably be looking there
he will not sign with a team where he'll get less minutes

agree with someone's point if TA signs for too much money we might be able to get marquis at a good price
he did a great disapearing act after injury but at the beginning of the season was probably our best sub

Given the Celtics need for depth at the wing position (the team could use someone who can play SF even if Tony Allen is brought back), Boston could very well have to choose between overpaying Tony Allen, begging Marquis Daniels to come back, or signing the vet min wing equivalent of Shelden Williams.

If forced to choose between those three or playing a bit understaffed at the wing positions on the bench, which do you prefer?

Agree that he's injury prone and lacks a consistent jumpshot. Don't care that he's peaked at his potential, I'm not looking at him as a future starter but he fills an important role on a contending team. I don't think he'd be available in September after his playoffs. Having someone on your bench that can slow down Kobe would be a boon to many WC teams who can't get past the Lakers.

I don't know either, Andy.  If it isn't for Tony Allen we don't come close to the finals.  Tony seems like a Scal in that he plays whatever role is asked of him well and doesn't seem to sulk.  Daniels didn't come close to supplanting him.

I don't think he'll need to be overpaid.  But he should be well paid by somebody.  I don't think he's peaked yet.  He played better basketball this season than last.  For somebody with a terrible basketball IQ....He's a pretty amazing defender.
