Gaykers

Is this really necessary?

Not at all ... in very poor taste.

Well the rest of us thought it was great. I gave him a Tommy Point for it... I guess that shows how much (or rather how little) you guys know.

Or how childish some people are to mark out for a gay joke, and not even a funny one at that.

I for one don't find gay jokes particularly funny or witty.

If it was really funny or witty, I'd totally go with it; comedy not being particularly concerned with things like good taste.

As it is - it's just tired name-calling.

Why on earth would he say that with microphones all around him? I'm sorry, I don't care how many titles he's mooched, he's a terrible coach. Saying that stuff is just hurting your team.
He said it to motivate hi guys. Who cares about bulletin boards when you are in the middle of a game with a chance to win?

It's not like what he said wasn't true during the regular season. I'm not sure how the Celtics knowing he said that would make a difference in their ability to close out games.

All fans have the same attitude of "How does this stuff help? It's the NBA Finals", but like it or not, athletes use this as fuel. The Patriots would completely make things up to motivate themselves. The Giants during their Super Bowl run 2 years ago used the media to fuel their fire. You don't have to like it, but it happens.

Also, Gaykers is something I would say when I was 10 years old. Let's just call them doo doo heads and call it a day.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
I have no problem with what Phil said.  He's a coach trying to motivate his players, and what he spoke of was the truth.  We might not like it, but he's reminding his team that they have a chance due to numerous Celtics melt-downs...

Phil knows the mic is on, and I'm sure it was also a ploy.  But these guys aren't junior high basketball players, who actually need anything to inspire them.

Nothing to see here...

Ironically all the arguing over a derogatory nickname for the Lakers has drawn far more attention to it than if it'd just been left alone.  The nickname is juvenile in my opinion but repeatedly quoting it to cluck your tongues at it is pretty counterproductive and clogs up an unrelated thread.

Content:

Looking back on Phil's comments the day after, while it's definitely his right to say things like that, it smacks of desperation to me.  Instead of telling his team to take the game from us he's basically telling them to wait for us to give it away.  Doesn't seem like a smart approach really - seems more like his own bitterness about getting beaten down all night, and a lack of faith in his own players, coming through.

And I was also thrilled to see the look on KG's face when he was told about it in the presser.  Not that he needs the motivation but he's not gonna forget that.  I generally liked that none of our players seemed particularly happy about the victory and were instead focused on getting that 4th win.

Most of the comments here are just sour grapes.  Phil is a great coach.  Did Pippen/Jordan win pre-Phil?  Name me one coach that won with terrible players.

Also, though I love to hear into the huddle, I really do feel that should be private information.  A coach shouldn't have to censor what he says because the world will hear.  It's a little ridiculous.  And for the record, I think the motivation he used was legitimate.  We WERE giving them the game.  I was scared s**tless down until Artest's FT woes & Rondo's layup at the end.

Maybe Phil should teach his team how to WIN games instead of relyiing on other teams to LOSE games.  y'know... "coaching?"  i think that's what it's called, he should try it some time.

Prime example, Doc runs on the court to call TO to save his team a turnover, and i bet PJ would have just sat there with arms folded and blamed whoever made the mistake in the press conference post game.

Most of those late game comebacks in the playoffs come from the Celtics playing the clock instead of their game. Keep attacking till the very end.

But yes, Phil Jackson definitely is a title chaser. I'd love to see him build a team.

I think that was Phil trying to push his players buttons. But there seemed to be some desperation in his tone's voice. I don't know. But I know the media seems to be milking it. I don't really think any less of Phil today because he said what he said.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

What Phil meant to say was, "These guys ALWAYS beat the Lakers in the Finals.  They are practically the only team that ever does.  Just let them be themselves and we can uphold our end of the bargain by losing again."
Yup

Just based on the various clips of Jackson and Rivers speaking to their respective teams in timeouts and at halftime during this series, it is Rivers who is by far the better communicator and motivator.  I can't say enough about the job Doc has done.

What Jackson said regarding the Celtics's fourth-quarter collapses, even if factually true up to a point, was nonetheless uttered in a such spirit of fatuous condescension as virtually to guarantee its own refutation.

Pride goeth before a fall.
