Why on earth would he say that with microphones all around him? I'm sorry, I don't care how many titles he's mooched, he's a terrible coach. Saying that stuff is just hurting your team.

Yeah..I agree. I couldn't believe that Phil would say that..pretty classless from him, but hey! He's the Zen Master.....master of motivation.

Didn't work that time, though ;D

It definitely is bulletin board material, but I can't put fault on him for saying that.  His team was close and he was trying to motivate them into another level.  Sometimes if you believe a team is willing to lose a close game it can push you to break them.

That being said he was talking about the REGULAR season Celtics and not these playoff Celtics.  Definitely two different teams.

Hoopsters are tall, and their coattails are long. Give Phillip credit for choosing his stars very well.

This will come as a huge shock to, well, Phillip, but you didn't invent the game, pal.

Personally, I'd be on the the other 11 on your bench to actually contribute something instead of talking smack about the team that's dominated you all night, but Lord knows I am not you.

Phillip is a man of letters. Just ask him. You'd think he'd have some operating knowledge of the Bard's ruminations on hubris.

Apparently not.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

Ever since he gave us the "momentum is a strange girl" spiel as his team was imploding, I've had a doubt or two about his vaunted motivational skills.
Tommy: He's got a line about me. Tell him the line.

Mike: Everybody 60 or over knows Tommy as a player. Everybody 40 or over knows Tommy as a coach. Everybody 20 or over knows Tommy as a broadcaster. And everybody 10 or under thinks he's Shrek.

Phillip is a bum and all his championships are won by his great players not by his coaching he garbage compared to Red.

I thought this was actually good huddle material that his team needed to hear. It's not fair that the tv cameras are able to pick up team huddles. And it sounds like Pierce agrees with me.

Plil's arrogance can only be matched by Kobe's. Those two deserve each other.

The Captain just got asked this question, he said, "he's right...in the regular season we were. I haven't seen that in the playoffs. But coaches say what they can to motivate their teams, I would have told them the same thing."

Props to PP for answering truthfully (no pun intended) and with class. Let's all follow our leaders lead.

I agree with all of that.  The Lakers were pressing, and that was probably the best card to play to try and build them up.  Luckily the motivational attempt was no match for the black hole of failure that is the Los Angeles Lakers against the Boston Celtics  :D

EDIT:  But you better believe the Celtics will be watching that a time or two in their locker room before Game 6.

I agree that it was a good motivational speech, I think Doc would have done the same.

Doesn't change the fact that I thought "shut up Phil, you're gonna pay for these words". And he did. ;D

Not so sure how good a motivational speech it was. You would think he might focus on one or two good things the Lakers were doing. Oh, I forgot, the whole second half game plan was pass the ball to Kobe so he really had nothing else to say to his team.

I really enjoyed how both of these posts say the same things but in two very different ways.
