The problem here is the way it's being presented just doesn't fit because it simply makes zero sense how it's being construed. And it simply diminishes and overlooks all other factors for him asking for more shots.
Doesn't fit what?
It doesn't fit your perception of Ray Allen that is created through media interviews, media stories and the way he plays. For all any of us know for sure Ray could be the single biggest egomaniac and jerk in that locker room. Sure we hear all these stories of professionalism and getting out to the gym early and such. But we don't KNOW the guy.
All I'm saying is is that Ray saying something like this, in whatever context(because the context of the quote never was discussed), isn't impossible. And like BBall alludes to, could it be that he said it before the deadline as some sort of joke?? Who knows.
Again, zero problem with Ray being concerned with his future or with money. It doesn't fit in that Ray's concerns about either of those things would become known or that he would make declarations that would be constructed as such. As an extension, it being THE reason why he might ask for more shots.
EVERYONE considers Ray an excellent role model, hardworker, etc. for any sort of concern that Ray might have for his future to simply be summarized into a "yep, he wants more shots to increase his market value". He plays 35 minutes a game, I'm sure that if that was his main concern he could've easily jacked up more shots than than 12 a game. Hell, Sheed managed 8 a game with just 22 minutes a game.
Again, that he wanted more shots BECAUSE he wanted to increase his market value doesn't fit in the way he carries himself, in how he plays the game, on how he has been a role model to those around him, and how he has led by example as both a teammate and human being. And it doesn't fit how he has sacrificed his body in the last 3 years just to try and win a championship.
If Ray cheating to his wife on the side, it still doesn't make sense in how he paints himself to his teammates and the public eye.
So if Ray's good will and nature is all and act, as it could happen, I'd say it's even more ludicrous that he'd make his feelings about his future known. He's a well spoken very intelligent man.
I just don't see that scenario happening, and as such I think people are just constructing this rumor in a very flawed manner.
Let me just say this... is it possible? Sure, just like "anything is possible!", but it is the least likely scenario of all the multiple reasons for Ray to ask for more shots. Not dismissing it as an element, but I really really don't see any scenario in which Ray would use his concerns of market value as a gambit to get more shots.
When he also clashed with Rondo in 2008 and 2009... was it also for market value purposes? This is not the first time we have heard of Rondo and Ray not seeing eye to eye in how he's distributing the ball. And it has come into focus quite a few times in the playoffs.
